Must hundreds die before we take safety seriously?
As Kenya comes to terms with the death of nearly 100 people in an oil pipeline explosion in Nairobi, Zanzibar is mourning the victims of a ferry disaster that killed nearly 200 people. Accidents of this nature are all too common across the continent so we ask: Is health and Safety taken seriously in your country? Whose responsibility is it to make sure we are safe? Is it the service providers or do we have a role to play in ensuring our own safety? Do you take unnecessary risks that compromise your safety? What can be done to ensure safety guidelines are put in place and followed in all sectors? Yet weak law enforcement due to inadequate logistics, human capacity, corruption and negligence is the major causative factor. Wake up African governments!

Having said this, why would a government allow slums to be built along pipe lines? Why would we human beings subject ourselves to this kind of life? There is remedy for poverty. EDUCATION. We pay too much for our ignorance.

Talking from first hand experience whilst in Zanzibar, safety is not considered in any aspect of life. Human life is compromised due to widespread corruption. The governments need to establish safety policies and strictly enforce them. The big question, is there a will to do so?

Who ever does not is liable surely - if they have not perished with those they put at risk by ignoring the figure that is.

Poverty does not mean ignorancy. Brothers and sisters, it is time to wake up and smell the value of life. When there is life, there is hope. Don't toy with your life.
