Has the phone hacking scandal changed your perception of Britain?

Alex Jakana|17:00 UK time, Monday, 18 July 2011

The massive phone hacking scandal unfolding in the UK has gripped the imagination of millions of people in Britain and around the world.

The affair centres on the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News of the World newspaper and allegations that the paper unlawfully intercepted telephone messages. The News of the World ended up closing down last week after almost 170 years in circulation.

Britain's police force has now been embroiled in the scandal. Top police officers have been criticised for their handling of the investigation into phone hacking and allegations of wrongdoing have led to the resignation of Britain's top two police officers.

The media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and his son, James, will be questioned by British MPs about the affair on Tuesday 19 July.

This scandal has raised embarassing questions about press regulation, media ownership, the police, and potentially corrupt relationships between politicians, journalists and the police.

So as Prime minister - David Cameron concludes his trip to Africa, we ask: do you think Britain's reputation has been tarnished by the corruption revealed by the scandal? How do you feel about the way the press is regulated in your own country? Do you worry about how the police and politicians either manipulate or are being manipulated by the media?

If you would like to debate this topic LIVE on air on Tuesday 19 July at 1600 GMT, please include a telephone number. It will not be published.

No. The hacking scandal has not changed my view, nor should it tarnish Britain's image. After all, this is one media outlet's inpropriety or wrong doing. Unless, British government officials are found to have played a part. I will not be surprised if Ruppert Mudorch's media outlet in the US is involved in similar hacking or scandal.

It's sad to discover that journalists in a country that pioneered the concept of a free press believe that their special freedom, once granted by society so they could act as a public watchdog on power and privilege, are instead using it to invade people's privacy in search of juicy gossip so they can peddle their scandal sheets. How the standards of the profession have fallen.

my perception of Britain remains the same but the government need to clean up the mess and put legislation in place that will prevent future hacking. Hacking is becoming a problem for every institution, organisation and individual, we have to ensure that privacy and confidentiality aren't abuse in any way.

No it has not. The scandal is simply the fall out of evil tendecies of Capitalism. The private press had always been used by the capitalist establishment to force down our throat, the radical evil of capitalism. Unfortunately, the same press got carried away by the profit motive to engage in immoral, obsene and outrageous behaviour. The society would be much better for all these hacking scandals.

My perception about Great Britain has not changed. This is a powerful nation where no one is above the law. And you can see from the action being taken by government to deal with the anomaly. The question is, would any government take the same stance if this had taken place in an African country?

UK government should come out and tell the world what they knew then, and what they know now because British government acted like an Idiot pretending that this is their first time hearing the corrupt practice in the news of the world. It's a biblical saying that whatever bad deals done in darkness would one day come to light.Come on folks,UK government was cut up pans down.

what are we talking here? English people are not saints! There is no perfect human being on this earth. Corruption is everywhere in the world. Unfortunatly, the west thought they were saints. At least this shows and confirm that like in Africa, Europe, America, Asia, Australia, politicians, journalists, and ofcaurse police people are all the same - currupt in one way or the other.

Before now i know such would never happen in Britain because of the impression they gave the world - that there were next to perfection. But when such begin to happen, no doubt your impression about the country would change

British MPs have put the wrong people on trial by holding these inquiries. They should, instead, be asking themselves why (and how) one foreign individual managed to hijack their democratic process so completely that he had a veto on policies - from war decisions to EU membership and much else in between.

The UK will remain the same however Cameron should now follow the high ranking police officers and resign, he is tarnished with the same brush. Claiming that Blair and Brown were closer does not excuse his actions. He needs to answer the question "did you discuss the BSkyB deals " in greater detail, not just fob it off.

Well, the proof is here that in the 3rd world, the State own the media to spread its propaganda. Here, the State including its vital organ, the Police is in the pocket of the media to do each others dirty work. So next time when think it is only Johnny foreign is corrupt, please look again in the mirror.

For years Britain has been the tower of objective and competent journalism but with this hacking case, it has kept us speculating really what goes on behind the scenes. its brought shame to the whole media fraternity in Britain since now it will be a stereotype against any British journalist abroad.
