Does Abyei threaten the future of South Sudan ?
20,000 local residents have fled the town of Abyei after soldiers from the north captured it over the weekend.
Abyei is an oil producing and fertile border region contested by both sides. A military spokesman for the South Sudan government has described the seizure of the town as an act of war.
The northern army says it will continue to occupy the areas until an accord that will guarantee security and stability is reached.
US senator John Kerry who has visited Sudan several times describes the country as ''ominously close to the precipice of war''.
With South Sudan independence celebrations just weeks away, does the dispute over Abyei threaten the stability of the continent's newest country?
What do want to know about the Abyei situation, send us your questions.

The situation has been tense and explosive,if the Northern Army was the one that ambushed the SPLA convoy, the whole world would roar against Khartoum.Let us be just, why did the SPLA make that stupid mistake of attacking the SAF contingency withdrawing from Abyei? listening and taking advice of foreign advisers surrounding the South Sudan Presidency.
If the foreign interference continues from the side of both South and Khartoum Governments, there is no doubt this country is heading to another blood bath.
Apart from Abyei,if war break between South and North Sudan, one or two tribe will be left to fight the war. There is massive corruption, nepotism and tribalism in South Sudan.Donor funds are stolen and banked in foreign banks in Uganda,Kenya and European countries.
BBC, if you can not publish my opinion, but at least you will get my concerns of how complicated things will be for us South Sudanese.

President Bashir has said he accepts the referendum and is willing to help south sudan develop. The recent developments of Abeyi happend for a specific reason, the ambush and death of 22 northern soliders and UN peacekeepers by southern armed elements who were not suppose to be in the area according to past agreement. The last agreement (kadugli agreement) signed by both North and South states there should be no army of either in Abeyi only the joint police force. So what were the southern troops doing there in the first place? The North has been warning since sept 2010 that southern forces numbering 2500 moved into Abeyi but nothing was done by the UN and involved political forces. But after Ambushing 11 soliders and then 22 killed plus 188 missing and escorting UN personnels, its only vital that the northern Army move to insure it doesnt happen again. The CPA states Abeyi is part of the north until a referendum says otherwise. The northern Army presences is constitutional as long as the south violated the Kadugli Agreement.
Abeyi has been part of Northern Sudan since 1905 after its people decided to join the north. When the CPA was signed, the goverment had agreed a referendum on Abeyi to decide if it should remain northern or join the south. But then the south decided it only wants the Dinka tribe to vote in this referendum while ignoring the Messeria Trible which also reside in Abeyi. This is simply not fair and will not be accepted by the north.
The ball is now in southern sudan's court. The north has said it does not intent to invade the south but will stay in Abeyi until an agreement on security is reach. The way i see it, fair enough !!

The North is not happy for lossing the South and its resources that is the reason behind the occupation of Abyie by the SAF. This ownership of Abyei are nine Dinka Ngok chiefdoms but the regime in Khartoum is more desparate and they will not listen to any languange accept the barrel of guns. The UN must tack action and demilitarized the Abyei other wise the North and South will return to war.

My experience as the Sudanes who have grew up in the war torn country I have realized that the only mean to bring the generations of war to an end is to divided the Sudan simple according to 1956 border. The issue of Abyei was well defined during the negotiation of the Comprehensive peace agreement accords signed by the late Dr. John Garang.
People of Abyei was promised to vote with separate voting and can decided through the referendum whether they want to go with South or remains with the North Sudan, but the referendum of Abyei did not happen because the regime in Khartoum was using the Abyei issue as the fearful tool to destroy the CPA so that the Country will go back to war. We people of the South will never leave our brothers and sisters of Abyei suffering in the hand of brutal Arabs in the North; the issue of Abyie must be resolved through peaceful dialogue not war because our people are tired of war. The Abyei regions and its entire habitants was transfered to Southern Kordufan by the Brithish colonial in 1905 without consense of the Abyei ccitizens; therefore, the UN must act before the issue flare into full scale of military between the two Nations, the North and South Sudan. The Abyei portocol must be implemented in which the people of Abyie must vote in referendum and their decision will be respected by both South and North Sudan governments other wise the Abyei dispute will continue and will be another Kashmir of Sudan.

This action has indicated the fact that the Khartoum elites and thier leader Omar Bashir are enemy of peace in Sudan. The regime in Khartoum have been working days and nights to destablized the South but they have failed and now they are using Abyei as the loophole to enter the war with South but they will fail.
The issue of Abyei is the major setback for peace not only in South Sudan but also for the entired two Nations. To bring such conflicts to an end the following agendas must be addressed sincerley.
First, the Khartoum must withdraw their forces from Abyei for the sake[Personal details removed by Moderator] of peace so that this will allow the negotiation taking place because peace cannot be negotiated while the people of Abyei are underseige of Northern Arms.
Secondly, the case of Abyei must be tranfered to the UN security council and the Area of Abyei must be demilitarized base on 1965 border between the North and South Sudan. the Comprehensive Peace Agreement must be also fully implemented because the issue of Abyei was well define in the CPA that the people of Abyie must be allow to conduct the separate vote with their fellow Southerners on Janaury 9, 2011 and decided their fate but the it had not happen because the Regime refused them to vote.
Third, the international community must declare Abyei NO FLY ZONE for both North and South Sudan governments until the issue is resolve through negotiation and then the 9 Ngok Dinka Chiefdoms inhabitants the Abyei must be protected by the UN peacekeepers and the Peace Keeping Forces in Abyei must be given ful mandate to protect the civilians.
Finally, Arabs Janjaweed, Mesirya and all Arabs militias must also be ban to enter the Abyei because their presents while the conflicts is not yet resolve will cause hovocs.

Can't Bashir see the wave of change going on around him been master-minded by the people themselves? The south will be free and Abyei fate will soon be known.

Oil as a natural resource is bound to cause trouble for these countries - North and South Sudan. Those entities behind the splitting of the original Sudan into North and South should have first resolved the issue of Abyei before announcing the split. I think we are getting to a point where war and killing of innocent people is no longer acceptable. This is a chance for the African Union and all other regional bodies to step in and assist in mitigating the circumstances that are causing this unrest. The innocent people especially women and children who are powerless and voiceless are often caught up in these conflicts and they should be saved. We as Africans should stop looking at war as the only way to resolve conflict. There has been a lot of blood shed in the Continent so please let the Abyei issue end well.
