How do Somalia's youth see the future?

BBC Africa HYS Team|19:17 UK time, Monday, 24 January 2011

The 26th January marks 20 years since the fall of Somalia's last President Mohamed Siad Barre. Since then the country has been reduced to a battle zone with its image overshadowed by war and conflict.

To mark this anniversary BBC Africa Have Your Say is asking what role young Somalis hope to play in their country's future.

The programme will be broadcast from the Horn of Africa community centre in west London, and we'll be linking up with Minnesota Public Radio, a city which has the largest Somali community in the United States.

Young Somalis in both venues as well as in Mogadishu will be able to talk about their sense of identity, and their relationship with their homeland under the most trying of circumstances.

Do you have a question you'd like to put to them? How do they see the future? What would they do if they were running the country? Is Somalia simply ungovernable?

If you would like to debate this topic LIVE on air on Wednesday 26th January at 1600 GMT, please include a telephone number. It will not be published.

I don’t think the youth of Somalia are looking at the future. Most of the armed gangs are dominated by youths, even the pirates. I think the ONLY life the youth of Somalia know now is violence. “Survival, the fittest”, sounds like the common language in Somalia. It is worth mentioning that we are talking about young people whose entire lives have evolved in conflict. Can the Somali youths break ranks with their adult leaders?

With the escalating rassom funds finding there way into ligitimate busineses around eatsern and central africa, somali youths would rather involve themselves into such risk, but high rewarding ventures. We need to find a long lasting soltuion to such a scourge if we need to have these somali youths think and visualise the future.

  • Comment number 4.

Such negativity from the two comments above.
Somali youth today are living in a life of poverty, hate, and fear.
When you get an individual who is affected by the three components above then there is no surprise that they themselves will turn to violence as well.
I am very certain that future for these youths will be a great one. One of them will rise and bring peace to the land that I once called home.
He or She will bring great change to Somalia.
Until that day I will sit and patiently wait.
There is no room for negativity, but there is room for hope.

The youth must come to the north and get inspired to change the people in the south. The somali youth in Somaliland are shaping their land and their communities and they are creating vision and prosperity in their communities. Unversity graduates, business men and women, politics, journalist, administration. There are many challanges and set backs, however for a country that is not recoganised, The Somaliland authority are really doing their best to arm their Somali Youth for the 21st century, but still have many things to learn. The Somali youth will shape their destiny and not waite for those individuals on the 'white plastic chairs' decide their future, the Somali youth still have the light shining in at least on part of the country. Somali youth are resilient and will inshallah help develop their ccountry. Somaliland awaits!

I think Somalia's 20yrs crises can be solved within Somali people them selves if the Italian part of what is called before Somali Republic sit down and talk to each other peacefully without any foreign intervention secondly they can recognize Somaliland and then Somaliland Knew south Somalia with any other Neighboring or foreign country and it can help in if Somaliland gets international recognition. by the way Somaliland can help even the region with the fight of terrorism and contribute the peace and prosperous of horn of Africa if its considered their Legally status in the world stage.

The truth is that most of the western powers know what to do to make Somalisa governable but nobody wants to do it; the will of the people has to prevail! I was surprised a couple of years ago when the relatively moderate Islamic Courts came to power and brought some degree of order to Somalia. And what did the world do? They hunted them down and forced them out of power in the name that they were Islamists. And what was the result?: The real islsmists (Al Shabab) have emerged! Interestingly, when things got really hot, this very international community went and looked for the head of the overthrown Islamic Courts to come and chair the transitional government. Funny? Laughable? For how long will Somalis have a transitional government? Let the international community should allow the will of ordinary Somalis prevail! This is a country with an incredible sense of resilience but the international community keeps on undermining them. The international community has failed Somalia and should acknowledge that. The anarchy in the system is even a source of business(security on the coast, insurance etc) for a lot of international organizations and developed countries due to the presence of piracy on the coast of Somalia. The international hypocrasy has to stop!

  • Comment number 10.

Very soon there will be peace in Somalia! I look forward to that but in the mean time I only have to raise my hands up and pray for peace to prevail faster than its anticipated time. God Bless Somalia!

Somalia is beautiful, with a large beach front and resilient and enterprenurial people. There is hope in Somalia. Somali youth should make the wise choice of avoiding the Alshaabab. Instead, they should giveunited support their new President and embrace the help the international community are giving to progress. They should empower their new legislature, the army and police to improve security for it is the single key ingredient to their country's success.

When the peace is secured Somali youth born and raised in war and disorder should be provided with civic awareness education. They should be taught on how to live in a society of peace and order. The role of Polite interactions, obeying the law, civil discussions and values of making an honest living, must be preached in all mosques. They must also be provided and empowered to embrace adult education, for education is a skill that can be aquired at any age.
All hands on deck approach should be the theme of encouraging Somali's in the diaspora and in Kenya to return home, to teach in schools, serve as doctors, in government and rebuild their country. They have lost 20 years and they cannot afford to lose any more time.

Infrastructure development, ie roads, airports, mobile telephone towers will take Somali's to the future.

It bothers me, it hurts me that I along with millions of other Somalis have been forced to become citizens(and many others refugees) of other countries. We have been robbed of the opportunity to live in the country we truly belong. The future looks bleak; the initial clan conflict has now morphed into terrorism in the name of religious rule and I hope that the Puntland region can completely break away from Somalia and chart its own course for the betterment of its people.

In my personal opinion, i dont think Somalia will go back to normal when Siyaad Bare was the president, it wasnt great but good, much better what it is today. With that been said, the major problem is that until we as Somalian stop separting among us, Somalia from Somaliland,in my opinion, Somaliland doesnt exit in the eyes of the World, except certain individuals. But anyways, only way a country can build back up is to listen, communicate and work as team to better our country. On the other hand, only people suffering in this crutial situation is the people who live in Somalia that live poverty, hungry and no homes, everyone else who live U.S. and Europe doesnt know whats like to live there, to get abuse and so forth. Do i believe Somalia can go back to the way it used to be???? No, absolutely not, i lost of hope, because with this separation going on with in us. Until then, Somaliland cant build anything up until it get recognize by whoever they want to get recognition from, point blank......

The future of the Somalis in the diaspora is going to be like the one of the Isrealis during the zionist movement. They stayed outside Isreal for more than 1000 years but when the day was, the future was bright for them and regain they homeland.

So those Somalis in the diaspora will one day get back home when their country is rebirth from old way of life to modern system of living and government.

    The gulf that
    separates a world
    Camels carrying
    the seat of the soul
    Fish nets are cut
    Aden tore our home
    Somali pride was
    Go milk, Go milk
    No more milk
    Our desolation
    The gulf that
    seperates a world
    Sab is rich,
    Samaael is too
    Precious jewels
    embedded in
    Somali hearts,
    No empty Pirate
    story will erase
    the truth
    Engulfed by gulfs
    For those who think
    We fools
    Revive the Ship of hope
    For peace to

Only way country can build up is to stop separting Somalia from Somaliland. I believe Somaliland doesnt exit in the eyes of the World, World see Somalia as Country not Somaliland. How Somaliland can help Somalia, when it cant help itself. On the other hand, only people suffering today is the people who live in Somalia, get abuse, poverty, hungry and so forth. For the rest of us who live U.S. and Europe, have no idea what those people go through in dialy. Only way country can build up is to listen, communicate and work as team, and stop separting each other. Im not been negative, but as Somalis, we run away the problems when problem never get resolve from the beginning. I wish i have a place to call home, to visit and live permanently. I hate to say, I have lost the hope of my country because some so call leaders are not acting as leaders. I wish leaders could listen the youth, but i know they have the mentality of elder know best. Until then, situation will be the same or worse.

For me after twenty years of catestroph in my homeland, I did not give up, I am optemistic for three reason. 1.we are muslims and beleive that we should not give up and work hard to acheive better. 2. the somali youth are starting to understand that division and tribalism are the roots of somali problems therefore they are ready to take their country back from the old reckless politicians 3. the international community understands that somalia's detoriating situation could affect the international security.

The future of Somalia is in the hands of the youth, the youth must realize that they are the only hope for this country. The older generation needs to step back and let the youth take charge. This country has been w/o a government for 20+years now and different people have tried various routes to rebuild the country may be it is time to let the youth take charge. I strongly believe that the youth can change the future of Somalia if given the chance.

The reality is the people of Mogudishu and Southern Somalia are suffering terribly. Mogududishu is the worst because the civilian casuality by Ugandan and Buridian forces' shelling, firing and constant bombardment of the city has caused the deaths of upto 2300 deaths and 6,000 casualties. The international Red Cross who work with the hospitals in Mogudishu have said 2010 was the worst year in terms of civilian casualties for the residents of Mogudishu for a decade.

You have 80 % of the 1.5 million Mogudishu residents living in make shift camps in the Afoge Corrider outside Mogudishu.

The drought this year is the worst since 1992 and people and children are dying of starvation in the country side and in Mogudishu.

If you look at the situation before AMISOM and Ethiopian, UN and International community involment, progress was being made in Mogudishu; children were going to school, there was even a building boom. All that was needed was reconcillation and investment in police and security.

However, the future looks bleak of people's of people in Mogudishu and Southern Somalia, and what is the UN security council's response: more troops from Uganda.

The image Somalis have of the UN is men sitting round a table, reading the newspapers; whilst on the table, the blood of thousands of Somali women and children is being spilled on the table.

  • Comment number 23.

Do you think that Uganda understand the Somali people, or that they care about the people of Southern Somalia. The only reason they are there is because they want the billions of European and American tax payers' money, which is being used to committe genocide against the Somali women and children of Mogudishu.

All they have brought is death, destruction, displacement, and destitution to the people of Mogudishu.

Outside forces did not bring peace to the people of South Africa, Rwanda, or Liberia, by creating ethnic genocide.

Two days ago they shot at ten civilians that were unarmed and were in a bus. These included women, children and elderly, and they didn't even apologise for what they did.

What is shocking and disturbing is, why is Britain and Italy - countries that understand the Somalis- following this American genocidal policy.

The reason why I am using 'genocidal' is because nearly 95% of the civilian casualties are women, children, and the elderly.

We should not be pessimistic. There is always a second chance in every situation. The step that Somali has taken is already considerable. The country's history and even news is shifting from wars and ethinc conflicts to referandum and thhoughts for future.

It think Somalian youth should start thinking in that direction too. They should think of changes regardless of their current positions. Youths that were negatively affected by the two decades war and those who were involved in this should all think of change. They should stop and think of a future that is different from what they have now and before. They should consider all elements that led the country into this situation and decide to change.

I insist on considering the past before moving. They should carefully consider the past in order to commit themselves to eradicate all elements that put Somalia and Somalians in the current situation. Only this way can there be change...

Discouragement and pessimism do not have a place in Somalians' hearts. If we read the history of all nations in the world, there have been wars but people manage to build a nation out of it. Europe is an example of that. I am African and I assert that we have failled to peacefully build our continent because we do not look back or aside and see the impacts of our actions. It can be agreed with me that if this was the case, we would not have same conflicts that is causing deafs in Tunisia to be repeated in Egypt and similar for Ivory Coast and Gabon. Putting aside all political forces that may be behind these conflicts in the continent, Africans have a major role to play.

I am therefore certain that if Somalians especially young Somalians decide to shift from the current mindset and position in more futuristic and peaceful positions and thinking systems, they will make it. Economy does build a country but united and determined people.

hopeful girl what do you mean Somaliland does not exist? Judging from rhetoric comments you have posted above I can tell you are a Southerner, are you aware of the thousands of somali youths who have fled from Somalia being offered safe haven in the Republic of Somaliland? the Somaliland youth have stood by and supported there fellow brothers and sisters over the past twenty years and in return this what we get from. Repulsive actions towards Somaliland will not heal or bring any hope to the Somalilnad people.

I love my country though I remember nothing of it- but I still believe that we can overcome. I was born when the civil war broke out in Somali, and was invited to this world with bullets and blood, yet I still love and still believe. Can Somali restore order? Yes, why not? Where in the world do we see people more close to one another as the Somali people are to one another, for they have ties and commonalities that make them so co-dependent on one another: same language, same religion, same culture; in the down fall, they have: same needs, same wants and all need and want one thing- power. Of course this is the very thing that destroyed Somali people and will continue to destroy them. The true killers of the country- the true destroyer of the country are the ones that are living abroad. For they are the only ones left to kindle the fire and set it off, they fuel they use is called money for a gabeel? Their cults and groups, making old "Wiseman" speak truth about keeping family names alive- all this while people back home die. Instead of setting examples, and sending their kids to teach in schools, they said there men to fight the war, and conquer all. But conquer who, the same brother you share the same language with, the same culture and same religion…..sadly, those old men will die but there words will live on and kids will continue to keep their “gabeel” name, but let us not forget that is the case of the majority, the ones that what a change- and see the damage a new land can do to young youth, who think it’s cool to swagger, kill, and not attend school. I see a future and when I do, I see me eating papayas under a palm tree, in the middle of winter, and I see a cool wind that comes strongly from north and west and sweet cool air that at times rises from east to west, I see my people all at peace, I see all these more….but I see this all while sitting in my home- Somalia.
So, if we, the youth lose hope then who else is left to hold the hope. You survived and come all this way to adjust and forget about where you came from? Let us not rest until we are where we truly belong, in our real home- Somalia
    _your Sister

My idea, the youth were failled and misled! And to fix this, there must be a revolutionary youth so that those to come have a something to act on.
Someone i know says,"we have to make our world to live in"This needs only to do what is right for everybody and in Somali,s case, they must be bounded Sharia.Any muslim nation seeks solution to their pron lems other than the way of Allah and the sunnah, will faill!
