Are African poll results too slow ?

AfricaHYS Team|13:26 UK time, Wednesday, 3 November 2010

Four days after they went to the polls, Ivorians await the results of Sunday's presidential elections.

In Tanzania tension remains high after opposition supporters held protests in several parts of country at the slow pace of announcing the result of Sunday's general election.

Whilst countries have rules governing the handling and announcement of the electoral process, delayed poll results in Africa often spark concerns about manipulation of results.

Frustrated voters point to countries such as USA, Britain and others parts of the world where election results are often known within 48 hours.

Should African election results be made quicker? If so why? How soon after elections do you want to know the results? How can countries reform or improve their electoral system to get the results sooner?

Electoral laws in African Countries should be changed to encourage speedier announcement of results,in order to reduce tension and encourage peace in African.

It may be be possible for African elections to be announced within a reasonable time frame. Logistically, most African countries do not have the resources or equipment that can facilitate swifter announcement of election results, such as computers. But it should also be known, from my conviction that some incumbents unnecessarily delay declaration of results, with the view to rigging if they know the results may not favour them. Within a maximum time frame of 72 hours results should either be declared or the trend known publicly.

Remember how slow were the election returns of the US presidential race between VP Gore and Busch.

... It is clear to all Africans that most delays in announcing results or partial results are not due to transport/logistic problems...There is enough technology around to ensure that elections are really free and fair... The problem on our continent is that most Politicians are rarely in the trade to serve their nations. They, just like the Bush,Rumsfeld & Cheney trio, are in the game with really good business cases!... Your vote better not get in between them and their rewards!
The problem of free and fair elections will only get solved when there is enough wealth for all people!

Results of AFRICAN elections are slow compared to that of Western Europe and the Americas this can be attributed to the kind communication gadgets found here in Africa.

African polls results are very slow due to so many factors. The first and foremost is the roads condition in the various countries. It is very difficult to get most parts of the most African countries which makes it hard to get results immediately after the polls. The other reason is the lack of technology to relay results to the public and the third reason is the motive by some incumbent who may want to play with the results.

The danger of keeping results for a longer time has the potential of creating speculation of some one wanting to cheat which causes other parties to result into demonstration and other form of violence.

African poll results will definitely be too slow because of politicians systematically trying to rig the results couple with the fact that, there are no good transportation network to connect the polling stations to the central region. What a pity.

  • Comment number 11.

Most elections in Africa are unfair and they usually take time to do their Maths correctly sop that the figure make sense.
My Country Guinea is having her first ever democratic election in 52 years, most African Countries also lack the resources to adequately give the results. Guinea for example has many regions that not easily accesible by car and there is no domestic flight in the Country and getting the ballot boxes to Conakry for counting takes days sometimes weeks.

Electoral processes in Africa needs total reformation, if credible election must be achieved, that is to say, all hands must be on desk to see that the manner and conduct of election in Africa meet universally acceptable standard.
