Uproar presents More Than Conquerors, Gascan Ruckus and Don’t Shoot
Top of the Town, Omagh
20/12/13

Next on the bill is Gascan Ruckus. The band is well known in Omagh, which is evident as the crowd anxiously waits for what is to ensue. Vocalist Michael Woods introduces the band quietly and calmly, almost lulling the crowd into a false sense of security before the band dive headfirst into opening track ‘Swimming’. This sets the tone for the rest of the night. Sporting a magnificent beard, which by now has its own fan base, drummer Ross Mc Kernan almost beats his drum kit into submission by the end of the first song. The bands energy is palpable and infectious, with the crowd respond accordingly. Gascan introduce us to no less than three new tracks during their set named ‘Hello’ , ‘Down By The Line’ and ‘Bitter Victories’, which all show a slightly grungier sound than what we are perhaps used to from the 4-piece. Their standout track ‘Pieces’ has the room shaking as the moshers quickly take to the dance floor. This is what we have come to expect from a well-established band who always leave you wanting more.
Playing their first ever Omagh show, More Than Conquerors are showcasing their recently released album ‘Everything I’ve Learnt’, which numbered 8th on Across the Line’s Irish Albums of the Year. More Than Conquerors take to the modest sized stage and open their set with their latest single ‘Pits of Old’. The Belfast based 4-piece make the stage their own and immediately set about showing this Omagh crowd why they recently headlined their own show at the Limelight, Belfast.
‘Smoke, Trees, Lungs, Knees’ presents drummer Jamie Neish with an opportunity to unleash MTC’s arsenal of heavy rock tones. Each thud of the bass drum is like a punch to the heart and reverberates around the room, shaking the building to its very core. This already indomitable performance is stepped up a notch further as vocalist Kris Platt and guitarist Danny Morton join the crowd for ‘When the Well Runs Dry’ which not only excites the crowd, but cements their credentials as one of the best live acts this country has to offer. Their fast paced track ‘Try-Antlers’ perhaps gets the best response from the crowd who have been spoiled from the first second. When their set comes to an end, the group graciously applaud their audience and leave safe in the knowledge that this Omagh crowd will be petitioning for their swift return. Overall, a very professional and fluid set from a top class band who deserve their plaudits.
