Strength – I Like
Compressions & Northern Ireland Yes (In Session)

22nd April 2016

They Say: “I Like Compressions’ is a conversational pop song - equivalent to the male Bird of Paradise's eloquent display to the elegant other.” The song ‘Northern Ireland Yes’ is my attempt to embrace the cultural psyche of where I grew up and send it back through my own channel. Two worded - Northern Ireland has always felt like a title that belonged to my Father’s generation. Escapism is the language of my generation, but these days I am more of a realist.

We used two of the BBC's microphones to capture what we were playing in the room, as this was the most accurate representation of what we sound like and who we are. A straight forward and radio friendly approach one might say.

We use a Bass guitar, a drum machine, an organ and vocals because these are some of our favourite instruments. We like to use space in our music too. It helps the listener to hear what is going on. The bottom line is - it doesn't matter what equipment you’re using as long as the work is good.

We Say: “They really rolled the dice with this - bringing vintage technology into our studio and insisting upon performing around just two mics. In fact - it could have been an absolute disaster. In reality - it was one of the finest and most exciting sessions we’ve broadcast in a very long time. We should never have doubted the kings of wonk pop and their unconventional ways.”

Strength’s latest single ‘Northern Ireland Yes’ is available on 7 inch via their website – strengthmusic.co.uk.
