We Cut Corners - On Avoiding People

Friday 24th June, 2016

They Say: “This song was a lot of fun to record as it’s a lot more spacious than anything we’ve attempted in the past. Conor O’Brien’s bass playing really brings the bounce and the inclusion of brass in the closing section adds a sinister undertone to the palette.

Some songwriters claim to use their process to overcome a perceived dysfunction or personal difficulty, so I thought I'd address the titular social tick through writing the lyric to this song. It didn't work unfortunately and I still pathologically avoid people all the time.”

We Say: “‘On Avoiding People’ is a fresh-sounding slice of melody-driven indie with carefully constructed lyrical wordplay. The backbone of Villagers’ Conor O’Brien’s bass - and a wall of percussion - is complemented perfectly by the soaring dual vocal harmonies we have come to expect from We Cut Corners.

A sombre soundscape-style coda shines a new light on the track, and makes repeated listens all the more rewarding.”

'On Avoiding People' is the new single from We Cut Corners, and it will appear on their forthcoming (still to be titled) third album. It features contributions from Villagers' Conor O'Brien, members of Booka Brass and the Frates String Quartet.
