The Making Of - The Jepettos

Across The Line

It's always fun and usually a little surprising when you go under the bonnet of an act you admire, as our 'The Making Of' series has proved. This time around, Mike (with Ruth!) of The Jepettos talk us through what's made them tick musically both past and present. The Jepettos - responsible for some of the cutest, dinkiest pieces of music ATL has played in recent time, play two shows in Belfast this weekend - Voodoo on Saturday night (alongside Katie and the Carnival) and The Black Box on Sunday (with Monday's session guest Ciaran Laverty).

****

Embarrassingly, the first record I (Mike) bought was was the single 'i'll be There for You' by The Rembrants. My dad had loads of great records already so I didn't feel the need to buy anything until then! As for Ruth - 'Stay' by Lisa Loeb.

Not so embarrassingly we bought Soak's 'Sea Creatures' & Bombay Bicycle Club's latest album 'A different Kind of Fix' more recently. We'll be buying Ciaran Lavery's album this week too when it's out!

The one gig that made me want to be in a band was Nirvana's, 'Unplugged in New York'. I wasn't there of course - but I saw it on TV a bit later and got the idea! As for one musician who inspired me to start performing - definitely Noel Gallagher. Like many boys in the 80s and 90s! I quickly moved onto Radiohead.

The last album we listened to together would be William Fitzsimmons' 'The Sparrow and the Crow'. Or possibly Bon Iver. Also, we all have been passing around tracks online - the latest favourite being 'Even if we try' by Night Beds. We're all David C Clements fans too. We always bond over Bombay Bicycle Club though. We've even moved from brushes to sticks for the next EP, inspired by them! We all went to see them in Queen's students union last year and loved it.

If forced to pick just one local act to share a stage with every night.... for a sell-out crowd, Not Squares! For our favourite tunes - Go Wolf. If we could have one person join our band though, it'd be....Jesus. We only have 200 followers on twitter and he has a huge following. The first cover version we tried - 'Chicago' by Sufjan Stevens. The last cover version we tried - 'Chicago' by Sufjan Stevens.

Finally, a guilty pleasure, something we're into that may surprise people?

Anything with a goat in the chorus.
