This week Chris Jones joined Rigsy and Stuart to talk new music including:
Jape - The Heart’s Desire
Chris: “Jape’s fifth album ‘This Chemical Sea’ ...came out in January – so it was probably one of the first new albums I heard this year – it still stands up as one of my favourite…Irish albums of the year.
Galants - Out Of Sight
Chris: “They’re a really great new band – one of the best new Irish bands I’ve heard this year. Big sort of shoegaze influences there – Dinosaur Jr. all over it….They wear their influences on their sleeves but they write some good songs too.”
Meraki - Bright Lights
Stuart: “Half of them are originally from Derry - that’s Hannah McKinney and Jack Carlin - the rest of them are variously from Cardiff, Newcastle and Scarborough but met up at college in Leeds…Bright Lights is their kind of big play really…”
Documenta – Selene
Chris: “We have full details of their new album, which is confusingly called Drone Pop 1 – the first album is called Drone Pop 2… I think the reason for this is I think that a lot of this stuff was written and demo-ed before the first album came out and now it’s all being re-recorded… it’s out on 13th November through Touch Sensitive Records…a new Belfast label.”
Space Dimension Controller - Galactic Insurgents
Chris: “It’s featured on a new EP…on the Dutch Label ‘Clone Royal Oak’ – ‘it’s correlation 3’…a lot of his stuff is sort in the sphere of kind of deep house and disco - very smooth and lush – but in this one – it’s a bit more of a sort of brittle sort of nineties techno…eighties electro sound to it as well…heavily influenced by Aphex Twin…but it’s still got that kind of spacey, cosmic aesthetic to his track titles…”
Don’t Shoot - Dance With Sincerity
Rigsy: “Formed in 2012, from Omagh – a five piece…we were keen… to highlight this brilliant new EP… ‘That’s the truth even if it never happens’…Any of the tracks from the EP we could have played – this is just a favourite of mine.”
