Arborist – Dark Stream
Tuesday 18th October, 2016
They say:“I always loved the opening horns on The Walker Brothers' version of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’. They are sombre but there is something resolute about them too, like things-might-just-be-alright-you-know. So, I had that in mind when approaching 'Dark Stream'. Add the motown / Phil Spector drumbeat and you've got yourself a very good case for a lawsuit!
It's the 2nd song on our upcoming album so I wanted it to be quite direct and it was always intended to bleed into the violin and cymbal-rush of the opener as a quasi-funeral horn. Then Jonny Ashe's guitar took it in directions I couldn't have conceived. He's a master.”
We say: “Words like 'poise' and 'majesty' were thrown about when we played this on the radio, pitching ‘Dark Stream’ as a sort of dignified moment of contemplation amongst a show dominated by noisy rock n’ roll. Perhaps we laid it on a little thick - Arborist are pretty rock n’ roll in their own unique way. I guess we were just transfixed by those heartfelt vocals, the raw production and the use of something we don’t hear enough of on ATL - brass.”
‘Dark Stream’ is from ‘Home Burial’, the forthcoming debut album by Mark McCambridge’s Arborist. The single and album are released on 11th November, 2016 and include their debut single ‘Twisted Arrow’ which featuers Kim Deal (Pixies, Breeders) on vocal duties.
