The Making Of - Bee Mick See

Across The Line

For this weeks 'The Making Of', it's time to catch up with hip hop nutjob (and we mean that in the best possible way)Bee Mick See. He's about to release an EP called 'Birds over Nupes', the follow up to 'Laryngitis', a harrowing tale of one man's battle with his own voicebox....

The first records I bought were Nirvana’s Bleach and Nevermind on cassette. I was 10. Don’t have the tapes anymore but still love the albums. The last album I purchased was a used copy of Will Smith's - Willenium. It was released shortly after the birth of his second child Jaden Smith and is one of Bernie Mac's all time favourite albums.

Seeing Capdownplaying in Giro's circa the early noughties made me want to start a band. Being around a collective of like-minded people and attending punk gigs certainly strengthened this. The musician that most inspired me in the beginning was Zach De La Rocha of Rage Against the Machine. He just had this energy about him that was all his and when he was on stage he owned it. He was performing for him. If you liked him great, but if you didn’t he wasn’t worried because he loved it.

I’m a solo artist. But I do perform with a dear friend of mine named Paul Denver. He's a great actor. I think Pocket Billiards were the last band we watched together. We bond over Krispy Kreme, who recently had to change his name to Froggy Fresh due to copyright infringement. He’s been referred to as the Rebecca Black of rapping. But Krispy’s our mucker and his tunes are parrful!

The one local act that I’d happily share a stage with every night is Empty Lungs. Kev’s one of my best mates, I'm pretty sure Paul Denver gets on with him, and the rest of the lads are all dead on too! Plus their tunes are sweet to the beat.

The first cover I tried as Bee Mick See was Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby. It’s an absolute tune! Paul Denver and I played that at the Sidewalk Cafe in Manhattan, NYC a few years back. Can’t remember the last cover we tried. I would like to eventually cover some classic hip hop tunes acoustically though. For example Ice T's - Cop Killer or Salt 'n' Pepa's - What a Man.

The one act that you may be most surprised that I listen to and love isLana Del Ray. My bird got me into her. Her music, voice and videos bring you back to simpler times. She's brilliant!
