
It's been a busy summer at Custom House Square in Belfast, and as the season draws to a close tonight sees the last of a long run of performances, with a fantastic line up of ROE, Tom Odell and headliners The Corona’s.
First to grace the stage is Derry’s own rising alt – pop sensation ROE. Fresh from various festival appearances, the multi – instrumentalist puts on an impressive performance with each song capturing the audience’s attention. The use of dark swelling synths and melodic guitar riffs is atmospheric and truly captivating. She begins her set with new track ‘Monster’ causing a colossal impression. Despite her youth, her songs showcase the maturity of the songstress; tackling important issues such as mental health and the pressures of social media in today’s society in sonically contrasting tracks such as ‘Down Days’ and ‘Girls’. With each performance her confidence grows, making her a delight to watch.
Next on the bill was Tom Odell. His set consists of piano driven tracks with dramatic build ups and indulgent instrumentals from each member of the band. His use of three part harmonies in each song is effective creating, a choral feel as he captivates the audience with his commanding vocals and dynamic fluidity throughout. At one point he throws his stool away and scales the piano sending the audience into a frenzy. He then serenades the audience with an impressive rendition of Billy Joel’s ‘Piano Man’ followed by his hit ‘Another Love’. Overall Odell puts on a commanding performance, showcasing his impressive talent for his instrument.
Dublin natives, The Coronas burst onto stage to flashing tubular lights, rumbling bass and drums accompanied with an orchestral piece creating an atmosphere of excitement. Beginning their set with the high energy track ‘Just Like That’ they set the tone immediately for their performance. Each track emanating charisma and charm, making the audience feel part of the show. The crowd can't help but sing along. The band’s sound on stage is intensified with a brass section and backing singers in the performance of their most recent single ‘Find the Water’. Next front man Danny O’Reilly performs solo, His crisp vocals and use of gentle guitar picking on ‘Hero’s and Ghosts’ captivating the audience. The use of a warm orange haze on stage reflects the mood and intimacy of the piece. This is followed by tracks, ‘How it Goes’ and ‘Get Loose’ using smoke machines thrilling crowd and getting everyone dancing. All in all the band are tight, and their show is an incredible production. The Coronas continue to thrill with an energetic and fun live show, leaving the audience always wanting more.
