R51 - Elephant

Tuesday 21st June 2016

They say: “We wrote 'Elephant' out of some demo riffs that Jonny had in January 2016. We actually originally recorded a few live versions at some gigs we did in at the start of the year, and a full-on live studio version too.

We had been building a polished multi-track version on top of the original demo recordings at the same time and ended up with two versions of the song, which totally cut our family and friends in half with opinion on which was better. This one is the studio, polished one that got one more vote than the other, and so the live one we have sitting in the vault.

It's a song about how, as opposed to people caring lots about things, we think the world would be better if everyone cared a little less about stuff.”

We say: "The R51 advance now seems unstoppable. ‘Elephant’ is all texture and thrill, ambition and tremendous musical capacity.

Their affinity for the Smashing Pumpkins is reflected in the sheer guitar angles but Melyssa’s vocals are bold and commanding and whisper it, ‘Elephant’ is a great, glinting pop song."

Elephant is the brand new track by Belfast alt-rock outfit R51, exclusively premiered on Across The Line, on Monday 20th June 2016.

As often as possible Across the Line aims to bring you a great new, recent or interesting track each day, Monday to Friday. To get your new music to Across the Line send it via the BBC Introducing Uploader.
