ATL’s Track for the Day #62
Across The Line

#62
Tuesday 9th December, 2014
R51 - Hummingbird
They Say: “We wrote and recorded all synths and guitars in our own studio about 5 days before heading into the imminently booked session at Start Together (for the Scratch My Progress EP) to begin tracking drums (played by Jonny, due to our previous drummer departing weeks before), bass and vocals, with Rocky O'Reilly at the helm.
The track is a contrasting song about being stressed out (which, we naturally were at that time!) We played Childish Gambino’s newest album ‘Because the Internet’ to death and we were keen to play with samples (which Aaron put together in the verse sections) and naturally old school Blondie was echoing around the studio HiFi (as usual.)
It’s a strange and interesting snapshot into transitional R51, before Matty Killen joined on drums and it’s far from the live, brutal, full band recording sessions on the new EP coming in early 2015.”
We Say: “Another band to feature on the very strong Scratch My progress CD series. On ‘Hummingbird’ Belfast five piece R51 display an incredibly well developed sound. A great lead vocal is matched by huge guitars and drums, driven forward by that snare beat. ‘Big choruses and pretty verses’ is how they describe themselves, a description which fits, perfectly.”
