Matua Clap – ‘Cleave’
They say – “Compared to some of our other songs, 'Cleave' seemed to fall together fairly effortlessly. The main riff in 13/8 feels jagged, but bouncy at the same time, to me it almost has a Spanish flamenco feel, but a bit more 'rawk'. For the verse we keep the time signature the same but treat it much differently. It's darker and more atmospheric, with the vocals hugging the bars to give it a plodding, metered feel. The structure is fairly straightforward, but the uplifting chorus and 'dreamier than thou' bridge section makes it a really fun song to play.”
We say – “Regular listeners to ATL will know we've a penchant for a wonky time signature. And there's few wonkier than 13/8, a rhythm Mutua Clap explore with their first release. A hugely adventurous first track, but not one that surprises, given they feature members of Afflek and Kasper Rosa.”
Matua Trap will play Voodoo, Belfast tomorrow (17th September) with guests 100 Onces and The Stonemasons.
