Strength - The Crying Game

Tuesday 14th June, 2016

They say: “Little Gem records in Dublin released a compilation album in May on mini cassette called Record Store Gay. It features several Irish bands covering gay anthems.

They asked us to be involved and ‘The Crying Game’ performed by Dave Berry was our first choice. This is our own spin on it, rather different from the original. I used a four track cassette machine to record the whole song. We sampled an orchestra for the end of the song, whom Conor heard tuning up whilst walking past a community centre in Manchester.”

We say: “Having seen no shortage of covers since its original 1964 release, ‘The Crying Game’ is a track that might struggle to sound fresh in less assured hands. Fortunately, Strength manage to bring something brand new to the table with their take on it.

Baritone vocals reminiscent of Ian Curtis combine with the band’s trademark lo-fi approach and some well-placed orchestral staccato stabs, resulting in a wonderful track that rewards repeated listens.”

Alt-pop four-piece Strength are from Derry~Londonderry and you can catch them live in Belfast the 30th June. They'll be performing in Sick Records at 2pm and then Crescent Arts Centre in the evening, supporting Michael Mormecha.

As often as possible Across the Line aims to bring you a great new, recent or interesting track each day, Monday to Friday. To get your new music to Across the Line send it via the BBC Introducing Uploader.
