Independent Venue Week
Independent Venue Week is a seven-day celebration of small music venues across the UK, running from 23rd – 29th January.
In the words of its founders, “these venues are the backbone of the live music scene in this country and Independent Venue Week wants to recognise all that they have done to create some of the most memorable nights of the past, so they can continue to do the same in the future”.
Official venues in Northern Ireland include Belfast’s Voodoo and Sunflower Bar. The former celebrates the occasion on Friday 27th January, with performances from Welsh post-rock band Yucatan, Manchester indie-pop act Horsebeach and Belfast’s own drone-pop favourites Documenta. The Sunflower Bad presents ‘Strppd Bck Series 2’, also on 27th January, with local acts We Were Thieves, Nolan, John Andrews and Nathan Hughes.
Oh Yeah Music Centre will also be joining in the celebrations with a special gig on 28th January, featuring Arborist, Franklyn, Our Krypton Son and Joel Harkin. This will be one of a series of special Oh Yeah events across 2017 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Centre.
In addition, BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Steve Lamacq is set to take his show on the road to celebrate Independent Venue Week, broadcasting from five different venues on five different days throughout the week. These iconic venues include Harlow Square in Essex, Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, Jericho Tavern Oxford, Sticky Mikes Brighton and the Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham.
As usual, these shows will air Monday - Friday, from 4pm - 7pm on BBC Radio 6 Music.
