Not Squares at Auntie Annies, Belfast
Wow, so this is it... the last Animal Disco ever. The band who played Auntie Annie's this time last year are bringing the “Tropical, Indie, Electro Dance Party” to a close with none other than Two Door Cinema Club spinning the decks. Surely a night to remember?
It's set to be a fantastic night, however no New Years Eve is complete without the obligatory countdown to Auld Lang Syne and whilst everyone sings and embraces their fellow man, Not Squares quietly creep on stage and begin 2012 with a bang courtesy of 'Can Opener'. The band build up the crowd using the song as if it's a warm up; it's a bit slower than what they would usually produce, but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in it's gravitas. With every beat of the drum grabbing your attention, Not Squares have heralded their arrival in most epic fashion.
The night is firmly in swing and the band treat us to what is to be their next single 'Fall Far', immediately reminiscent of Oppenheimer, with robotic vocals and what keyboardist Michael Kinloch calls, “the most poppy thing we've ever done.” One of the tightest live acts you can see, at times the band seem to be in another world, concentrating on giving you the best they can give, so much so that at periods during this cold New Years Eve it almost looks like steam is rising from Drummer/Vocalist Keith Winter.
The party gets even bigger when the band 'Release The Bees' and the crowd lose their collective minds, random audience members jumping on stage. One young man picks up a pair of drum sticks and starts playing along with the band on a spare tom, the remarkable thing being that this doesn't actually detract from the song. Songs like this are so easy for the crowd to get in to, they surely cement Not Squares as one of Ireland's top party bands.
When speaking to the band after the gig tonight they said it was an emotional experience playing the final Animal Disco and that it had been a great platform for new music all around Northern Ireland. Animal Disco will be sorely missed in the music scene here, but it's been a simply fantastic send off and tonight has shown future promoters how it should be done.

Great bloody gig it was too!
