Electric Picnic 2011 - The Rapture
Electric Arena, Friday 2nd September, 7.15pm
Describe in a Tweet: How deep is our love for the Rapture? Pretty deep, apparently.
What happened: There's a surprisingly large (and good natured) crowd here at the Electric Arena for this performance from the Rapture, and the atmosphere is one akin to a carnival even before The Rapture take to the stage. These days so called "party bands" rarely stick together for more than an EP but with the band on the cusp of releasing their third studio album (albeit with some minor detours on the way) there's something just a little bit special about this DFA marquee band. With a sound that bears all the hallmarks of the New York dance-punk scene they've the crowd in the palm of their hands for the most part. A live and energetic rhythm section, a frontman that revels in the glory and some genuinely great tracks with simple refrains fuel this performance and the Rapture deserve acclaim for this set: there's never really a lull in the set (bravely playing their biggest two hits halfway through) and a medley towards the end works well. It's the latest single How Deep Is Your Love that steals the show, surprisingly. The same four to the floor house beat provides the basis for this track but it's a well layered piece that lends as much to house music as it does to electronica, the crowd erupting as we finally reach the refrain. Fans will have been in heaven, and the Rapture have undoubtedly picked up a few new ones along the way due to this performance.
Good Fortune: The Rapture enjoy a good saxophone part now and again and that live brass adds just a richness to their quite crisp, electronic sound, but the cowbell solo in House of Jealous Lovers sends the first 10 rows into ecstasy.
Evil: The live rhythm section for the most part does work well but once or twice there's a few noticeable timing issues: not a game breaker considering the complexity of the parts but something as vital as the percussion should be almost flawless in this genre.
EP rating: 8/10
