Electric Picnic 2011 - Funeral Suits
Electric Arena, Friday 2nd September, 3.45pm
Describe in a Tweet: Flashes of promise drowned out by overwhelming basslines.
What happened: The Electric Arena feels a little empty as Funeral Suits begin their performance, but the band attempt to fill the massive tent with their murky, intense music. Armed with keyboards, drum machines and guitars Funeral Suits clearly have a sound in mind but it doesn't seem to transfer into reality: the synth bass completely and utterly drowns out the vocals, the guitars and pretty much everything else within ten feet of the marquee. Our disappointment in this performance is elevated because we know they've got the songs in them. Colour Fade is as impressive live as it is on record, and there's a strong sense of melody ingrained in the band's work: we can just barely hear the vulnerable vocals and the lead keyboard.
Good Fortune: By the end there's a gorgeous intensity to the guitar work and we can see the Sonic Youth comparisons: there's a gritty drive to the band and despite the volume detracting somewhat the basslines are oddly effective, adding a layer of darkness to their material.
Evil: The sound lets this band down in a big way, making this an average performance instead of a potentially fascinating one.
