Oxegen 2011 - Peter Hook and The Light
Green Spheres, Friday, 5pm
Describe in a Tweet: He's lost control.
What happened: Peter Hook wheels out the Joy Division hits to a feebly populated Green Spheres tent. The few punters that litter the tent are a fractious mish mash of punters who may remember Joy Division first time round and curious indie kids looking for a lesson in indie history. Unfortunately the only lesson on tonight's class schedule is on how to grow old disgracefully. Hook ambles around stage like a loutish uncle at a wedding proving to be the antithesis of the infectious jagged jackhammer of one of indies seminal untouchables Ian Curtis.
The band are met with affection-less indifference throughout the majority of the set, that is until they wheel out the Joy Division home run catalog. Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart inspire the crowd into some nice pogo dancing but even that isn't enough to convince. Essentially this is a Joy Division cover band cashing in at the expense of its legacy.
Crazy In Love: Hey look they're playing Joy Division hits!
Why Don't You Love Me: Aww look they are totally ruining them.
