Chattering Classes #42 - Paul Shevlin

Post categories:

ATL|16:22 UK time, Thursday, 14 April 2011

This time around, it's time to chat to Paul Shevlin. Makes sense, what with ATL hammering his new single 'Backfire', even opening the show with it a couple of weeks back! Even though Paul didn't bother getting out of bed to chat with our Rigsy, he did win us over by turning down the opportunity to star in Eastenders or a film alongside Robert De Niro.....

*Mistakes are authors own - online chat simply copied and pasted for your pleasure!

Rigsy says: hi paul, rigsy here

Paul says: hi there Rigsy says: i am wearing a shirt and sitting at a proper desk

Paul says: i love the sound of that

Rigsy says: usually when i do these things i'm lying in bed.

Paul says: i'm lying in bed

Rigsy says: so this should be really, really professional like you're on newsnight

Paul says: haha that's the dream

Rigsy says: so i'm wearing a shirt and you haven't even bothered getting up? Ha so lets talk about the forthcoming election.

Paul says: lets...

Rigsy says: lets not, i'd probably lose my job. Are you full time 'being paul shevlin' at the moment, if ya get me?

Paul says:Yeah. It's not an easy task, looking this good

Rigsy says: lol, that was the most ridiculous question i have ever asked anyone

Paul says: i'd like to think you ask the same question to others if they are full time paul shevlins also

Rigsy says: but you know what i mean like i mean are you flat out becoming a popstar

Paul says: ha yeah, i i'm doing this lark full time at the minute

Rigsy says: how many hours in front of the piano a day

Paul says: 2? yeah 2... maybe

Rigsy says: what about businessy stuff, wheelin and dealin gotta make twheel and indeed deal

Paul says: all i do is wheel and deal, i'm never done wheelin and dealin too many wheels and deals if anything

Rigsy says: i just watched your video, it's splendid. how important is that type of stuff visual aspect - artwork and videos. lot of bands in belfast are 'just about the music'

Paul says: Did you do the classic mistake of thinking there was a problem with your internet?

Rigsy says: ha ha yes and i still do or i did to you just said that because there is a problem with these daft computers in our work. Works either way TBF

Paul says: ha I wanted to make the video/artwork/tune all connected i thinks it's nice when bands/artists have running themes through their stuff

Rigsy says: in what way?

Paul says: makes it more interesting, well the tune is about looking at past mistakes, the video is going back over the same day and the artwork is set in an antique shop

Rigsy says: people will be watching the video after reading this (hopefully) so give them a little introduction

Paul says: it's sort of like groundhog day...or exactly like groundhog day only with sheep.

Rigsy says: that was the one thing groundhog day was missing so if anything you've bettered it. in all seriousness, you fancy yourself as a bit of an actor?

Paul says: i love acting, i may not be very good at it but i enjoy it i spose!

Rigsy says: so the question is

Paul says: you can cover up wooden acting very well with stop motion ha

Rigsy says: you can play second stage at glasto at 4pm on saturday or have a speaking role in eastenders for three scenes, you have to pick.

Paul says: aah see if you had of picked corrie then i would have been sold

Rigsy says: okay, corrie or 7pm on the second stage

Paul says: eastenders is too depressing for a chirpy man like me

Rigsy says: so you take the gig?

Paul says: hmmm... I’ll have to go with the gig to look cool

Rigsy says: okay, how about you get the supporting actor role in a de niro flick OR you get a one album record deal with your favourite label

Paul says: oh me and robbie are tight, i'll take the deal and wait for his call.

Rigsy says: you could get him to be in your first video ANYWAY, gone down a weird route here, tell us about paul shevlin live

Paul says: while we tour with backfire we're going down the whole ben folds five 3 piece thang - bass/piano/drums

Rigsy says: wow

Paul says: but when backfire is done with i'm looking into getting a giant band on stage 5/6

Rigsy says: perfect. giant in numbers or giant sounding or both

Paul says: add some synth/guitar maybe some brass. giant in sound, and if i need numbers to make that happen then numbers also. I'd like to make it more of an ensemble thing live

Rigsy says: how do you go about picking musicians to perform with? you still there?

Paul says: yeah sorry my internet is being a diva.

Rigsy says: how do you go about getting musicians

Paul says: usually i'll know people before hand that play whatever like my drummer has been my friend for years but finding a bassist was tough so we put an ad on gumtree.

Rigsy says: so you don't actively hunt people down

Paul says: not in a weird way

Rigsy says: i'll let go as both our internets seem to be melting

Paul says: ha

Rigsy says: but tell us before i do, post 'backfire'. what are yr plans?

Paul says: hopefully a summer single with di di mau, another bigger tour and some exciting news regarding publishing!

Rigsy says: festivals?

Paul says: yeah, hopefully a few mainland as well as the usual local suspects

Rigsy says: nice one, all pretty exciting, good luck with it all, keep the tunes coming :-)

Paul says: cheers, will do!

Rigsy says: over n' out!

Paul says: roger.

Rigsy says: ROGER
