Chattering Classes #41 - A Northern Light

Post categories:

ATL|15:46 UK time, Wednesday, 23 March 2011

With two EPs in just a years existence, A Northern Light are one of the most pro-active bands in Northern Ireland. The Strabane/Belfast three-piece band are stepping it up even more, with a bunch of shows and a debut album (AND a BBC Introducing session!) on the horizon. Nothing more happens however, until they take a little time to chat to our Rigsy....

*As always, chat is reproduced as it happened online - spelling and grammar errors are authors own!

Darren says: Yo Yo

Rigsy says: good afternoon

Darren says: it certainly is

Rigsy says: is it disrespectful that i'm on my sofa and wearing tracksuit bottoms? kinda feels like it is

Darren says: not at all as I too am on my sofa eating a stuffed sausage sambo

Rigsy says: stuffed? with what?

Darren says: yup..Stuffing! and bacon

Rigsy says: NICE. so now we're both fed (chicken sarnie)

Darren says: I know..Right

Rigsy says: we can continue. friday night then - according to our elizabeth's review, seemed to go quite well. what did i miss?

Darren says: Well..For a while we have liked the idea of the Animal Disco cause one band gets to do a full complete set..and that's what we planned for and hopefully executed lots of different movements and emotions

Rigsy says: you reckon you're the type of band needs a full set? to breathe, like

Darren says: Absolutley..Myself and Omar in particular have always felt that..If you can engage an audience for a period of time you can travel somewhere together. Cause we have always been mad about Pink Floyd and the like...

Rigsy says: ha ha. i have a VERY short attention span tho - is that going to be a problem when watching you live?

Darren says: Not at all..actually that is sort of our aim..to take the ideals and sensibilities of prog music and deliver it in short blasts of melody. so..were perfect for ya

Rigsy says: like.... if prog is the full 90 minutes....you guys are the match of the day style edited highlights?

Darren says: haha..I'll buy that for a dollar. We don't like to get too bogged down in the prog thing these days tho

Rigsy says: i never really associated prog with you TBH but now you've put that in my head i'm going to call you a prog band on the radio all the time. unlucky!

Darren says: :-(

Rigsy says: i jest . has the band you wanted to form and the band your in now...would you describe them differently?

Darren says: Not at all..the first few months as with any band..was a searching time. But when we hit on 'The Right Thing To Do' we really felt we found our voice and the direction of the band..

Rigsy says: i've also noticed, always did with you guys.... you reference local acts as much as you do anyone else - you're defo a new band who have properly come out of the 'scene' (boke)....if you get me

Darren says: lol

Rigsy says: as in your influences are taken from going to gigs in belfast as mucha s they are specific albums by massive acts. is that fair?

Darren says: No that would be a fair point..when we first arrived in Belfast 6/7 years ago we befriended many musician friends and sort of all developed together..of course at different speeds but it's fair to say were influenced by our friends yes

Rigsy says: so who are your peers then? if you had a voucher for a posh dinner and had to bring three bands out to eat who would you pick? like who are you guys pally with, who do you borrow amps off and stuff?

Darren says: Were pretty big mates with A Plastic Rose, me and Omar met them touring in or last band 'Tapasia' and we have a long running friendship, it's the exact same with The Rupture Dogs(met them when they were soundchild!!)and Colenso Parade and Kasper Rosa..Also my brother's band Gacys Threads.

Rigsy says: everyones mates with a plastic rose. they're common as muck

Darren says: haha..this is true..but not like our friendship with them..we've seen them naked

Rigsy says: nice. like in the local band locker room. you chase them round the place with wet towels

Darren says: Stranger things have happened - believe me!

Rigsy says: so that's a couple of EPs you have out now, which is good given we didn't know you existed this time last year. what about the debut album then?

Darren says: Well..that's the main aim over the next 12 months. We have been writing all the time in our studio space which we frequent pretty much 9-5 as we don't work crap jobs anymore..So I can safely say there will be a debut album before this time next year full of uplifting tunes

Rigsy says: so youz are pretty much professional with this now?

Darren says: Yes indeed..Getting old see Rigsy..wasting no more time..

Rigsy says: well i wouldn't know about that. the gigs coming up then.... warrenpoint...draperstown?

Darren says: Yeah the Easter Festival in the Hideout in Warrenpoint should be a cracker and also were doing a live session for BBC Introducing 2mrw..and we also will be playing in front of City Hall 6th April as part of the student protest on Fees

Rigsy says: how'd you get involved with the protest?

Darren says: We got it offered to us by the man looking after the band line-up, John D'arcy..and we are well looking forward to being part of it..we wanna make folks feel better and I suppose that fits in with what they are at. making it a better place for us all (well cheaper)

Rigsy says: good luck with it all then. what does a professional like yrself do with the rest of his wednesday afternoon then?

Darren says: Omar and Colm have just landed and were off to the studio to learn the cover song for the BBC session..going to be a goodun

Rigsy says: SWEET. see you tomorrow then. regards to the rest of the guys. peas

Darren says: Indeed..enjoy the sun bro
