Chattering Classes #40: Foy Vance

Post categories:

ATL|17:11 UK time, Wednesday, 16 March 2011

For this week's online chat, Rigsy caught up with legend in the making Foy Vance about his Belfast show tomorrow night, recording with David Holmes and plenty of random nonsense beside. The chat took an odd turn, as it became unclear whom was interviewing whom...

* As always, please excuse spelling and grammar, which are author's own - chat is copied and pasted and thus exactly as it happened!

Rigsy says: there we go! BOOM!

Foy says: indeed

Rigsy says: what do you be up to on the average wednesday lunchtime then

Foy says: It's always a mystery.... I never know what's gonna happen...

however, today I'm sitting in Browns of Brockley, the best Coffee shop in South East London according to Time Out. So good, it's frequented by Gwilym Davies the 2009 World Champion Barista... not to mention Suzie from the Taxi place next door.... I like her better though as she always smiles and lends me her lighter...

Rigsy says: do you like to be out and about? as in would you prefer to be in a coffee shop than on your sofa?

which is where i am. not on your sofa! on MY sofa

Foy says: out and about? elaborate....

Rigsy says: just to clarify. i am NOT in your house

Foy says: shame. Home made coffee's good, but not a patch on this stuff, so I tend to come here at least once in the day

Rigsy says: so how do you preper for a trip to belfast? excuse my spelling btw. but what do you look forward to? what must you always pack when heading home?

Foy says: Speeling is esqyouzed

I don't really prepare that much to be honest, aside from what time I need to be where..... With regard to what I never come to Belfast

without....(?) my guitar! and clean pants of course

Rigsy says: okay then, say tomorrow was, for whatever reason, your last visit to belfast ever. Like nothing bad is happening, you just can't ever visit again.

other than visit friends and family - what would you HAVE to do one last time

Foy says: say it's not so Rigsy

Rigsy says: you've a couple of hours and can take photos and souveners and you can go to bangor, but that eats up 20 minutes

Foy says: Well, I'd like to say a pint of Guinness in the Rotterdam Bar but as far as I can tell it's not a possibility anymore....

does it have to be something that can actually happen or can I use my imagination?

Rigsy says: as if i would ever EVER try and stop you from using your imagination ;-)

Foy says: of course...forgive me.... I would travel to Bangor, eating up the 20 minutes.... I would have a pint of Guinness (I see a theme here) in Fealty's bar on High Street, in the back room by the fruit machine....

that would take another 20 mins... then I would go and sit by the water for the rest of the time.

I was born by the water and I imagine sitting there looking out on it knowing it's the one things that has remained stable in all my time, it would surely instigate a lot of thoughts and memories....

Rigsy says: wonderful

Foy says: incidentally, some people have been giving me questions for you... just to mix things up a little bit... you happy to answer?

Rigsy says: i can't think why anyone would be interested, but absolutely.... *bursts with excitement*

Foy says: OK... what if we go question about?

Rigsy says: no one EVER asks me questions and I HAVE SO MUCH I NEED TO SHARE WITH THE WORLD as well

Foy says: Shane Kelly asks.... Have any of the interviews he's done caused him to change any aspect of his life, and if so which ones

Rigsy says: wow! this guy should be doing my job tbh

Foy says: the rest are not like this I should add

Rigsy says: obvious answer is Wayne Coyne - such a beautifully positive, inspirational human being. Makes you want to.... i dunno, be nice with everyone. and more fun as well.

Foy says: I'll pass that on.... your go...

Rigsy says: you're playing on st. patricks day (tomorrow) what does st.

patricks day make you think of? any particularly memorable st. paddys days you can think of?

Foy says: The first thing that came to mind, interestingly enough, was a trip to Dublin. Just me and my Dad. We went down on the 16th so as not to miss any of the parades.... we went to McDonalds, as at the time there wasn't one in Belfast and it felt like a real treat (it doesn't anymore...)... we watched the parades, then my Dad bought me a flag and a Barry McGuiggan T-Shirt that said Cyclone on it.... we went home on the 6pm express from O'Connell St, eating our somewhat luke warm burgers.

Rigsy says: ha ha, amazing!! i'm singing the barry mcguigan song. you remember it?

Foy says: I forgot about that! ok... here goes... Don Thompson asks...Does he believe in death after life? That's a bit of a meaty one eh?

Especially where we're from.... tread carefully brother ;-)

Rigsy says: sweet jiminy christmas

Foy says: uhuh. I am but the messenger

Rigsy says: i'm going to say no. that after life we continue to live through people's memories and anecdotes about good times

Foy says: you go girl! Have you ever heard the qoute by Jonny Cash that says "life is a road lit only by those who loved me"?

Rigsy says: i haven't, but that's class. right MY TURN - if you died tomorrow and were to live on through one anecdote about something interesting you did in your life, what would you like that anecdote to be?

Foy says: that's a good one Rigsy... you're getting all Parky on me here

Foy says: I can tell you this though - If my only ever musical experience was singing Be the Song that night at the Ulster Hall, I'd be happy enough with that....

Rigsy says: ach brilliant foy. I can't bring myself to talk about that night most of the time - seems totally surreal. when it ended....i have never had an anticlimax crash like it in my life

Foy says: I agree....it was a beautiful night. Speaking of which... Steven McBride wants to know what you think the words to Be the Song are (I should say this is a bit of an ongoing joke on my twitter site)

Rigsy says: ha ha like people mishearing lyrics?

Foy says: exactly

Rigsy says: well the first time I heard you play it, just at the start i thought it was going to be tender by blur but lyrically, i am desperate. this isn't exactly a good thing to say to someone like yourself -but i'm all about the melody. still love the track, mind

Foy says: what's wrong with that? not everyone likes spuds.

Rigsy says: nothing at all. i don't *dislike* lyrics, ha, they're kinda secondary for me a lot of the time. which is why, i think, i've never been mad about dylan but yeah, it sounds like 'for the woman' or something

Foy says: close enough... you're turn

Rigsy says: 2011 then. when i interview you in December what will i be asking you about

Foy says: All being well, my trip to 1960 in the time machine invented by Apple.

Rigsy says: why 1960?

Foy says: just the first thing that came to mind... always seems like a good year... my parents agreed to marry in 1960... maybe I could talk them out of it and call this whole thing off.... ;-) you know, like Back to the Future

Rigsy says: are we going to get a record in 2011

Foy says: yes. You may even get 2. actually it may be 3

Rigsy says: SWEET. lets start with one, like

Foy says: Well, I've nearly finished this record with David Homes..... I'm heading back out to LA in May to finish it off all being well.... and then I expect it to be released before the summer, if only on my site at first

Rigsy says: good old david holmes. that guy, honestly, like - what a hero what about tomorrow? SUCH a buzz about the gig. without rubbing it in, those who didn't get tickets...are missing...wat?

Foy says: well... I plan to play it all on the back foot, but if there is any sort of plan, it is to play an intimate show... not just in that it is to 220 people, but I may play some more of the new material, and some older stuff that I don't always out. I guess you could do that at any gig, but it always feels more natural to do it in an intimate setting

Rigsy says: foy, thanks so much for your time. what a treat! genuinely can't wait to have new stuff to play on t'wireless. so, you know. hurry up.

Foy says: My pleasure Rigsy!

Rigsy says: safe trip home.

Foy says: I'll get you some sneaks soon enough... see you in Belfast!
