Post categories:

ATL|14:13 UK time, Wednesday, 9 March 2011

For this week's chattering classes, our Rigsy caught up with Before Machines, who've just came off a week long tour across England and Scotland. After quite a lot of online messing about, Dan (bass), Dan (drums) and Chris (guitars) from the band managed to set up a group chat....

* Please note, as always, spelling and grammar errors are author's own....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chris says: Rigsy, you there?
Dan (bass) says: is this happening?
Chris says: dunno. I'm confused.
Rigsy says: lol HERE I AM
Chris says: EYO!
Dan (bass) says: did you break the internets again? aha!
Rigsy says: cheers ladz. here we are then. all the lads. who's here?
Dan (bass) says: me
Dan (drums) says: me
Chris says: Me (chris)
Dan (drums) says: dan dan and chris
Dan (bass) says: I'm Dan
Dan (drums) says: and im dan
Dan (bass) says: He's Dan
Rigsy says: MELT. for the sake of this interview, can we call the drummer dan....
RINGO
Chris says: yes!
Rigsy says: to avoid confusion
Ringo says: id prefer bonham
Rigsy says: alright. chris, dan and ringo. thanks for coming online. do you all still like each other? after that tour, like
Ringo says: we like humous a lot more than we used to
Rigsy says: avoiding the question - thus you clearly all hate each other, but may be reconcilled by a mutual love of humous
Chris says: I just hate the Fiesta (no offence Dan)
Rigsy says: how many miles did you cover?
Dan says: over 2000, might have been 3....and my fiesta is awesome!
Rigsy says: was it just you guys playing the venues or local supports or what?
Ringo says: we organised most of the gigs with help from friends that were in local bands in each area pretty much
Chris says: We had local supports everywhere. Most of them were really good!
Ringo says: most
Chris says: We were supported by a Sicilian punk band in London, which was interesting
Rigsy says: where did youz stay if youz were just driving a fiesta?!
Chris says: We just crashed at friends' houses - it dictated where we could play, pretty much.
Ringo says: we have good friends. every place we played we had mates that put us up and fed us
Rigsy says: so proper messy DIY - thats the type of tour where there's bound to be real low points and real high points.....so lets start with the high points....
Dan says: it was mostly v comfortable compared to what we expected.
Chris says: The high points were the Scottish shows, and Brighton.
Rigsy says: why? just the busiest ones?
Chris says: Yeah, but also they were the most fun
Dan says: good crowds who were up for a good rock show
Rigsy says: what about low points then -not necessarily a gig, but just a moment or a day when it felt more like work?
Ringo says: flat tyre on the m6
Chris says: Definitely me getting sick - I was sick for the first two days.
Ringo says: running out of humous
Chris says: I was pretty much no fun until after the London show...
Ringo says: for me it never felt like work - i couldnt believe we had a gig a day for a week... loved it
Dan says: chris being sick, burst tyre on the m...5...? and Reading
Chris says: Yeah, all of Reading was a total low point. The Reading show was honestly the worst I have ever played, anywhere
Ringo says: we played while people were trying to watch the chelsea match. was it that one?
Chris says: It was in some terrible wetherspoons-type pub
Dan says: it was basically a whitherspoons. but worse
Ringo says: and chris had to show them how to use the PA
Chris says: They didn't turn the football commentary off for the support band
Rigsy says: HA HA
oh my word - so they were playing along with football commentary?!
Chris says: yeah! Like that Mogwai song...
Rigsy says: that. is. AMAZING.
Ringo says: the bassist was watching the match the whole time. He was transfixed on it.
Rigsy says: was he getting faster and slower depending on what was happening on the screen?
Ringo says: if only
Chris says: I wish I'd had a book to read during that show.
Rigsy says: it's a big deal though, going on a tour like that. did you have to double check with each other - you're all really serious about being in a band and all that like, even getting time off work and stuff....
Chris says: Yeah, that was definitely a concern.
Ringo says: yea it was tricky enough with us all working at different things
Rigsy says: did it require a proper sopranos-style 'sit down'?
Dan says: we had to plan this one around Andy working in a school, so it was over half term....and a bit - takes a lot of work planning ha
Chris says: we generally talked about it lots in practice
Rigsy says: How do you promote shows in cities you don't live in? or do you just hope for the best with the venues?
Dan says: It's hit or miss really
Ringo says: get the support bands on it! also there were a few promoters helped out and friends again
Dan says: As far as promo. The best shows had good quality promoters (Derby), keen support acts (Brighton+Edinburgh) or were just great venues
(Glasgow)
It would be way easier to be on a support tour with a bigger band, but we havent had that luxury so it's hard work, persistence and luck really
Rigsy says: bet a belfast show seems a doddle now and speaking of which anyone reading who doesn't go to auntie annies on friday, are missing....WAT
Chris says: We don't have to go anywhere near the M6, which is a bonus.
Ringo says: I've to drive from Ards though
Chris says: it's time for the Big Plug.
Ringo says: new songs! new leather jacket fashioned by andy melville
Dan says: It's in Auntie Annies and is mega fun times!
Rigsy says: you guys need a PR team. TERRIBLE plugs
Ringo says: we give it lots!! always energetic.. big vocal tags guitar riffs poppy hooks
Rigsy says: better. LETS JUST TELL PEOPLE TO GO AND LISTEN TO THE MUSIC
Ringo says: sweaty men
Dan says:beforemachines.bandcamp.com
Rigsy says: and on that bombshell. i'll leave youz to it. are you all in the same room?
Dan says: nope, all over the show
Chris says: no - i'm in work, dan's at home and ringo's in Ards!
Dan says: I should be in work...shhh
Rigsy says: well thank you ledz, enjoy friday, byeeee
Ringo says: i'm making pancakes
Dan says: Chris is making me some later
Ringo says: thanks
Dan says: cheers
Chris says: byeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzz
