Chattering Classes #37: Colly Strings

Post categories:

ATL|10:32 UK time, Wednesday, 16 February 2011

Despite literally not existing this time last year, Colly Strings are already a staple of the ATL playlist and a band who somehow manage to standout among any number of awesome acts in the country at the moment.

Our Rigsy caught up with Richard from the Bangor four-piece moments after both had finished watching The Brits....

(Spelling mistakes are authors own....)

****

Richard says: Hey man

Rigsy says: good evening. where you watching the brits? *were even

Richard says: we sure were... pleased arcade fire won eh?

Rigsy says: yeah totally! anyone else stand out for ya?

Richard says: Rihanna. and mumford and sons. but they weren't as pretty.

Rigsy says: if the brits was just NI and you guys won best breaktrhough....who would you thank?

Richard says: ermm your name would be pretty high up on the list HAHA...

Just the usual friends family and 'fans'

Rigsy says: ha ha, brilliant! i'd be all 'god i'm so embaressed' but really, LOVING it

Richard says: you'd love it

Rigsy says: ha ha! and if you could do a whacky collaboration, with any pop act, cause you guys are, like, in charge of teh brits, who would you do it with? and what song. and it has to be something youz could pull off, like

Richard says: we were just talking about that actually! We'd go for Example to collab on our own tune Teddy Robinson

Rigsy says: stage set?

Richard says: We'd all be on fire, just like plan B did at the end of his song

Rigsy says: health and safety nightmare man. took two guys to put that guy out

Richard says: yeah but we're hard as

Rigsy says: ANYWAY. in the new bands section of the NI version of the brits, yeah? youz have won. but what bands would you pretend you think should have won? like being all pretend modest and stuff

Richard says: Well the obvious one would be Two Door. But we'd want our good friends Key Of Atlas or Pretty ChildBackfire to win

Rigsy says: and what about a lifetime achievement award?

Richard says:Mojo Fury

Rigsy says: tehy ain't even released an album!

Richard says: yeah but they've been going for like seven years!!

Rigsy says: they have aye. how long witll you lot be going before you release an album? feel wick if it's seven years (no disrespect to mojo)

Richard says: yeah ano haha. hopefully come summer

Rigsy says: much of it recorded? or any plans how you'll put it out?

Richard says: well we're half way there, but we're writing loads more stuff atm so we have loads to choose from, and we're hitting the studio again soon! we're still discussing launch ideas...wanna do something different...not the usual launch gigs.

Rigsy says: nice. wanting to somethign different, is that part of their being so many other great bands about? it's getting harder to stand out these days!

Richard says: exactly... we always try to stand out and do things a bit differently, it's not coming across in our music as much, but we feel we're still finding our feet. We're not even 1 year old yet.

Rigsy says: really?! that's crazy. also brings us nicely to sunday - the new blood gig, for bands less than 2 years old - SO many amazing bands that are that young.

youz looking forward to be part of that?

Richard says: yeah we've got alot of competition. it should be a great gig, it's great to see so many bands coming from NI that like you said are so young, but still talented and amazing

Rigsy says: imagine it was a compeition :-) like an actual battle - a royal rumble....what would be your special move?

Richard says: We'd use wire cutters on everyone else's guitars

Rigsy says: so blatantly just sabotage?

Richard says: pretty much yeah. but we'd be ninja's about it.

Rigsy says: thats good to know. though you play songs and stuff though too that are quite good tbf - you could use them too. like, dazzle people

Richard says: Cheers haha :-)

Rigsy says: right last word then, cause i wanna watch my big fat gypsey wedding, there's 452 bands playing on sunday. why should people pick you guys as unmissable (and no threats please)

Richard says: Thats a hard question.....

Rigsy says: you really need to have an answer.....i'm away to the loo so that buys you a bit of time - you got about 3 minutes to get this RIGHT.... starting now...

Richard says: Probably because when we're on stage we hope that all the energy we put in to playing is projected out to the audience, so we make them feel like they are as much at home as we are. BOOM. and show them a good time ;-) f you like inuendo's

Rigsy says: back now - that'll do, don't put it on a press release tho tbh

Richard says: haha we wont

Rigsy says: right see youz on sunday ledz!

Richard says: cheers rigsy see you then!

Colly Strings play 'New Blood' - a three stage event showcasing brand new Northern Irish bands at The Limelight Complex, this Sunday.

Quite frankly, this interview is an embarrassment. Does ATL have no quality control or sub-editors? Would an external contributor be able to submit a review riddled with spelling mistakes and have it put straight onto the site?

I am not just talking about the cringe worthy deliberate spelling mistakes (for example the David Brent-esque 'down with the kids' spelling of youz), but the typos. The solution to an article full of spelling mistakes is not to put a disclaimer at the start but rather to fix the mistakes.

The BBC has one of the best websites in the world, and I would hope that everyone involved with it would be ashamed that such dross as this would be able slip through the quality control net.

This is utterly appalling stuff; even by ATL's already staggeringly low standards. Hang your heads in shame, ledz.

Not even a reply from big 'Pablo' yet? Is this not the whole idea behind blogs like this?! Come on guyz!

As i've said before, you can say what you like, its a free comment blog. Knock yourself out. Less of the big though, I am sensitive ;)
