Chattering Classes #24 - Fighting With Wire
Having finally finished their second album, Fighting with Wire are treating themselves to a few low-key Irish shows, followed by a full UK tour in November. But before any of that, Cahir O'Doherty, lead singer with the Derry three-piece, was subjected to fifteen minutes online with our Rigsy.
Please note, the following ludicrous conversation is reproduced exactly as it happened. Grammar and spelling mistakes are authors own...
****************
Rigsy says: THERE HE IS. hello
Cahir says: sorry lads
Rigsy says: lads? i like being referred to as more than one person
Cahir says: you and that creep paul haha
Rigsy says: i'm a one man crowd. be nice cahir this is all going up. the interview's started
Cahir says: great
Rigsy says: what are you doing
Cahir says: mixing an ep, fighting manflu
Rigsy says: birdflu TBF
Cahir says: and drinking coffee
Rigsy says: i've a cup of tea
Cahir says: sweet
Rigsy says: and a new version of my favourite choccy bar it's very exciting it's a christmas version
Cahir says: which one?
Rigsy says: man i don't wanna say. advertising innit
Cahir says: come on
Rigsy says: its also a kinda womanly choccy bar :-/
Cahir says: you've already sold out haha
Rigsy says: i have effeminate taste in choccy bars. anyway, this EP
Cahir says: yes
Rigsy says: ii though youz were flat out on the second album? are these tracks not going to feature?
Cahir says: it's done being mixed at the moment
Rigsy says: so these are even newer songs?
Cahir says: the ep tracks are not on the album
Rigsy says: wow so whats the....storyline going to be? EP then album?
Cahir says: we wrote so many for the record these are just extra ep for the tour album for 2011
Rigsy says: oh right only available on the tour?
Cahir says: yeah
Rigsy says: thats great man. very exciting. so the album then, IS IT ANY GOOD
Cahir says: we've been taking ages with this record
Rigsy says: you certainly have!
Cahir says: not our fault haha
Rigsy says: whos fault then? make a father ted style speech about it
Cahir says: my ma's. she locked me in cupboard for 6 months feeding me by ************** under the door
Rigsy says: fair enough. tighten you
Cahir says: oh it did
Rigsy says: so is this an album of solitude then
Cahir says: i wrote a lot of songs in that time
Rigsy says: with songs like 'isolation' from the mighty boosh
Cahir says: its a dark album very dark like dark chocolate that makes your face sweat
Rigsy says: that does't sound pleasant man. say something nice about it then say something bad again, like a criticism sandwhich
Cahir says: its got loads of good bits and then it has loads of **** bits too haha
Rigsy says: ha brilliant. is it better than the second bluetones album? who'd win in a fight your second album the bluetones second album or cast's second album
Cahir says: oh **** they are both amazing... oh its tough but i'm gonna go with the stone roses
Rigsy says: man that came from nowhere. stone roses bailing in and battering everyone. i'm one of those weirdos that prefers the second stone roses album. do you think there'll be similar weirdos with FWW second album
Cahir says: crazy up north maniacs
Rigsy says: wow thats such a good question i just asked
Cahir says: ha. we're very proud of this second record, i just hope people like it its just nice to be playing shows again to be honest
Rigsy says: here hugo is here, do you want me to get him to ask you a question
Cahir says: hit me. better be good
Rigsy says: hold on he's chatting to someone. in the meantime, you're doin wee gigs, dead sweaty, dark, like you're album, startn with warrenpoint
Cahir says: we always do wee gigs
Rigsy says: youz gonna do loads of these before the album comes out or aim towards a couple of biggies?
Cahir says: we're not a big band so it'll be smaller shows
Rigsy says: bt i mean look at what lafaro did - three tiny gigs when they could have done one biggish one so are we talking about that type of thing? [lafaro played three gigs in tiny menagerie for their album launch readers!]
Cahir says: i enjoy smaller shows better, bigger ones make me nervous - too much pressure for one tiny man...
Rigsy says: but then you headlined glasgowbury! headlined it like
Cahir says: we've been a part of that festival for years - we were supposed to headline last year when we were touring a record and on the radio, but unfortunately it didn't quite work out. so to be asked this year again was amazing. we tried to turn them down, but paddy wouldn't take no for an answer so when are nine bar getting back together and would you be up for supporting us?
Rigsy says: here comes hugos question
Cahir says: ...
Rigsy says: IS IT TRUE YOU GOT YOUR INSPIRATION FROM ME
Cahir says: who are you?
Rigsy says: careful now he's sitting here
Cahir says: it's an innocent question hugo
Rigsy says: he's struggling to answer, ha ha. he says i'm one of the pioneers
Cahir says: fair enough - well let's just say i draw inspiration a wide number of sources... mary black, joe dolan, the corrs (of course)
Rigsy says: he says he worked hard so you guys could come up behind if it wasn't for me... (his words) so SHOW SOME RESPECT (my words)
Cahir says: hahaha
Rigsy says: i think he makes a good point. back in the day hugo woulda our-partied any of you mooncats
Cahir says: tears in my eyes. you know the craic in Derry Rigsy
Rigsy says: right lets do a serious bit at the end. like, this has been serious but i mean REALLY serious, to end
Cahir says: no offence to Hugo x
Rigsy says: too late now mate. he's raging
Cahir says: haha
Rigsy says: he says he prefers jetplane landing anyway
Cahir says: traitor
Rigsy says: his words man, his words. right come on lets do a dead serious question at the end like real professional
Cahir says: right i gotta go here lets do this
Rigsy says: oh i'm sorry am i holding you back?! WELL ALLOW ME TO RETORT. right, here goes... WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES
Cahir says: x, early 90's rock, fugazi, helmet, weezer, nirvana, soundgarden, alice, dinosaur, pixies, pearl jam, all the greats. and ninebar
Rigsy says: did you ever model yourself on a front man, even when you were a nipper?
Cahir says: i didn't like music when i was a nipper - was into comics, then I was into rave and erasure flat out bin man carl cox paul p that sort of thing
(At this stage in the, erm... "interview", Rigsy got distracted talking to someone he kind of needed to talk to and Cahir clearly got a bit bored waiting. We don't hold this against him whatsoever. We'd have logged out long before he did to be honest.)
