Chattering Classes #21 - The Coronas
It's been a busy summer for Dublin indie-pop minstrels The Coronas, the highlight of which was playing to a massive gathering at Oxegen's mainstage.
Before starting work on their third album, they've a couple of things to sort. First up - a chat between singer Danny O'Reilly and our Rigsy, followed by a gig in Belfast this weekend...

1.08pm Danny says: Hey rigsy!
1:08pm Rigsy says: Danny! How you doin man
1:08pm Danny says: great thanks
1:09pm Rigsy says: thought you were caught in traffic....did you just get outta the car and run?
1:09pm Danny says: hows things with ya? no i literally just walked in the door. trying to get parking for a while
1:10pm Rigsy says: ha, okay. i was hoping you'd ran outta your car and sprinted in to do this interview!! i'm grand tho, ta. so where are you, what can you see around you? are you doin a load of press at the moment?
1:12pm Danny says: i'm in our manager's brand spanking new office in the very centre of dublin, it looks out over the central bank. very nice. not too much press at the mo actually, after saturday's gig in empire we've only one more show in sept, then it's time to start rehearsing and writing for new record
1:13pm Rigsy says: are you looking forward to the break from playing live? or is it kinda forced, in that you need to concentrate on writing?
1:15pm Danny says: i am looking forward to rehearsing and writing again, cause we've loads of ideas floating about and cant wait to work some more on them. summer is always a busy time for us and this one has probably been the busiest ever so yeah looking forward to just jamming the four of us and seeing what happens
1:15pm Rigsy says: i saw you guys at oxegen, well most of your set, think i arrived a bit late great stuff, nice to hear those songs performed live such a big turn out as well!
1:16pm Danny says: cool, cheers rigsy, appreciate that man
1:16pm Rigsy says: you guys and two door cinema club, massive draws.
1:16pm Danny says: yeah we were lucky we got on before the rain came down yeah love two door, great album
1:16pm Rigsy says: don't mean to sound surprised or anything, ha ha....but it's just good to see i guess in the south there's a really strong tradition of really supporting your own more so than up here you guys must get to play massive venues in the south, yeah?
1:17pm Danny says: yeah i know what ya mean. but i think two door are gonna be big everywhere yeah we've been lucky enough to play some nice big venues
1:18pm Rigsy says: is it hard going from being somassive in the south and then hitting the UK where you're still a relatively new band?
1:21pm Danny says: i wouldnt say it's hard. we never let things get to our heads, the fact that things are going well in ireland is great and we're so happy to have the support here. it can be a little disheartening trying to go over to the uk and do your own shows and start from scratch but we really do feel greatful that we get to travel to places and play at all even if we're not as big as back home. hopefully next year will be our year to take over the world though!
we just signed management and agency deals in US and hoping to sign publishing and record deals in next couple of weeks
1:22pm Rigsy says: wow, brilliant. yeah the states is there for the taking with you guys, surely....you always had your eye on getting over there and doing the business?
1:23pm Danny says: yeah well people always told us that actually but we never really knew how to go about trying to make things happen over there. ya know, we've an indie label here so we didnt really have any major connections.
how does one get a record deal rigsy?!
1:24pm Rigsy says: mate you're asking the wrong person. i'm just your typical bitter journalist who has to make do with talking to the bands cause he can't make it himself, ha ha so tell us what to expect on saturday what will people see when they walk in the door at the empire
1:25pm Danny says: haha i know. i dont think anyone knows really, it's about luck and someone important passing a cd to someone more important maybe but i'm a bit cynical. anyway it seems things are starting to move for us as i say sat is one of our last gigs of the summer so we'll defo be giving it loads
1:26pm Rigsy says: two albums worth of stuff now, is there much debating goes on with regards to set list and are the coronas a democracy
1:28pm Danny says: it will be our first full production show up north so we're gonna have a full lights show, two piano's, full crew so should be fun.
haha defo a democracy. there's always a bit of debating about setlists but it's funny, most of the time we're all on the same page and we can feel if a tune or acouple of tunes together are working well or not. it's great that we've the two records to choose from now, gives you more options and you can give songs a rest sometimes it freshens them up, we're like a football manager resting players for a game or two
1:29pm Rigsy says: hold on, two actual pianos?! like dualing pianos
1:29pm Danny says: well gigging keyboards
1:29pm Rigsy says: you have in bars in america, ha ha, aw gutted and as for album number three is much of it written?
1:31pm Danny says: to be honest rigsy i'm so excited about it. we've about 5 or 6 songs written and i've about 4 or 5 more that are ready to be written if ya get me. we wanna try work on them together as opposed to me finishing them on the acoustic and the lads adding their parts, we found on last record that the stuff that we wrote together was way better
1:31pm Rigsy says: ha, how can a song be 'ready to be written'? like its on the tip of your brain, trying to escape?
1:32pm Danny says: haha yeah i've an idea on the guitar and i can see how the whole song could develop but at the moment it's only a voice memo on my iphone!
1:33pm Rigsy says: haha. well it all sounds pretty exciting. good luck for saturday, hope belfast is welcoming and look forward to hearing and no doubt playing new stuff on t'wireless
1:34pm Danny says: cheers rigsy, appreciate it mate, we're really looking forward to it. james our PR guy says tickets are flying which is great, hopefully we'll have a full house yeah cheers man!
1:34pm Rigsy says: nice talkin to ya dude, all the best!
1:34pm Danny says: you too chat soon
