James Cook, from DelphicOne of ATL's favourite new bands are on their way to Belfast, as part of a splendid line up presented by Annie Mac. Delphic play the Ulster Hall on May 29th alongside Skream, Zinc and Annie herself.

Ahead of that, James Cook from the band was invited to answer questions about rave, debut albums and Iceland, free from the confines of grammar and capital letters.

It was all going so well, until he slagged off one of our own...

Hello there James, this is ATL. How the absolute flip are you right now at this very second?

very well thankyou! seething that our first trip to the US had to be abandoned, but resting, recovering and writing in the (comparative) luxury of our own home.

We're all looking forward to the show at the Ulster Hall. Is it fun or a bit scary to be on a bill that's nothing else but rave?

ah, its all good fun. we've played quite a few nights with annie now and she's great. besides, we're more excited about going to belfast - good friends of ours, two door cinema club told us so many good things about it on our tour with them last year. hopefully they will spread the word for us and the place will be packed out by kids thinking they're just watching a band, but bewildered by the fact they're having a rave up.

Your debut album is pretty special. Though I still prefer 'How to Operate With a Blown Mind' by the Lo Fidelity Allstars. What's your favourite debut album?

ha! on a serious note, probably debut by bjork.

TOPICAL QUESTION OF THE WEEK - Have you ever been to Iceland?

no, we now blame iceland for all of the worlds problems including poverty, drought and disease. i think we should all abandon this island and hope it once again sinks back into the sea with lifeboats made available for bjork and sigur ros. (disclaimer - ATL loves Iceland)

Half way through a long journey on the tour bus, what would you expect Delphic to be doing?

we're all training to be big time poker tournament players. the band was just a cover up for our grand ambition. most nights on the tourbus we're playing poker and revising the rules although dan is often sent to the sin-bin for keeping aces up his sleeves. he brings twelve packs of cards on every tour.

Tell us your favourite one-liner...

delphic do not joke. in one sentence at least.

NON-LAZY, SPECIFIC BAND QUESTION #1 - You guys have had the luxury of becoming popular mostly because of a great album and not because of ridiculous hype, as is often the way with new bands. Did you make a conscious effort to avoid over exposure or anything that might put you all under too much pressure?

we're fortunate that we live in manchester, and we have a team around us that filter out anything that might over-pressure us. by setting up our own label - chimeric - we've been able to do things and make decisions at our own pace.

The entire city of Manchester and the surrounding area has been maliciously set ablaze by as yet un-named evil forces. All humans have been rescued, but only you have the strength to battle the flames and take one item or building of any size and transport it to an island in the caribbean, which will become the new Manchester. What are you taking?

sam's chop house. i'm not going to be nostalgic by taking noel gallaghers house, or peter hooks brain. they're things of manchesters past and things that so many people in manchester despise, so instead i'm taking a fine eatery which i'd recommend to anyone. people need to eat on this caribbean island. i think they'll need to get hold of some jerk spice if its going to sell well though.

NON-LAZY, SPECIFIC BAND QUESTION #2 - You released a single on Kitsune, which must have been fun. That kind of made you label mates with a band from here you've already mentioned, called Two Door Cinema Club. Also, your song Doubt sounds a bit like their song I Can Talk...

oh, i'm completely unaware of this band. they sound terrible, they must have ripped us off. for sure. if i ever meet them i will give them what for....

Let's do the hard sell. Why should people come check Delphic out in Belfast? Say their favourite film is on TV that night - should they still attend the Ulster Hall?

you should come to the ulster hall to watch delphic because our lighting rig is so power sapping that no homes will have electricity for a radius of 25 miles, which means no TV, no films, no late night games of floodlit football. the only place with any light that night will be the ulster hall.

Lastly, in three words describe life, the universe and everything within it...

nonsensical all-pervading cosmos

Thanks!
