Amy's Fresh Meet: Inlets
After stumbling upon this little gem the other night, I felt compelled to listen to 'Bright Orange Ear' on repeat for the next half hour. The song is by a band called 'Inlets', which is essentially the creation of American multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Krueger. Inlets previously released an EP in 2006, which completely passed me by. Ah well. But they are due to release their debut album in April called 'Inter Arbiter', and so far this track has begun to spread through the interweb like a well-mannered wildfire.
It's folky, classicy, proggy and yet will probably tickle a lot of indie kids' hearts. A mild Rufus Wainwright-esque vocal melds with the other-worldly harmonies of Grizzly Bear, taking twists and turns into unpredictable melodies and harmonies that makes the ear twitch and stand to attention.
The album apparently features guest appearances from Zach Condon of Beirut and Angel Deradoorian of The Dirty Projectors, both of which I can imagine fit perfectly in Kruger's mosaic of sound. The record was recorded and mixed by Kruegar in his apartment and there is indeed a real intimate, nocturnal feel to this song. As for what else he's got up his sleeve, I'm not sure just yet. So my only advice for the moment is... DO NOT watch this video up close... Wooozy.
For fans of: Rufus Wainwright, Andrew Bird, Grizzly Bear, Department of Eagles, Final Fantasy, Beirut...
