Local Natives

Back around October last year, I found a version of Talking Heads 'Warning Sign' floating about the world of music blogs. Repeat listening was an involuntary reaction and a quick google led me to find more from the LA based Local Natives.

The rhythmical drive of this band mixed with the floating harmonies brings to mind a mixture of Vampire Weekend and Grizzly Bear. But that's not to say this band hasn't developed a distinctive sound of its own. Like their new single 'Airplanes', they easily move from rather poppy melodies into a mood of desperation. But overall, their debut album, 'Gorilla Manor' is incredibly uplifting.

Songs like 'World News' has vocals reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkle or the Beach Boys, while the next track 'Shape Shifter' recalls Radiohead with an anthemic Arcade Fire chorus. 'Camera Talk' has been on rotation in my car for months and I have yet to let it pass without singing my heart out with every chorus.

Anyway, why I'm writing about them now is they're going to be playing Belfast very soon - Thursday the 11th of March at the Limelight to be precise. If you haven't heard the album before, I'd definitely recommend it as I'm predicting a hell of a show. This has surely to include two drum kits live - which means I'm sold already.
