My most memorable BBC moments include the Wombles making good use of things they could find, Dirty Den's departure from Eastenders and Ade's stunning bottom burp in The Young Ones. Yours are probably quite different and you can find out how different by making your own timeline of BBC Moments.
Your BBC Moments is the third Your Story pilot made for Taster - the home for new ideas at the BBC. The first two news based versions were very popular but this time we wanted to test something different so used our TV & radio archive. We have back copies of Blue Peter annuals and tapped into the BBC Genome project to surface every Christmas Cover of the Radio Times. We also have key dates any programme highlights we can connect with key moments in your life.
We hope your collective nostalgia for Bagpuss, The Singing Detective, Life on Earth, The Archers, Swap Shop, (and almost 400 other TV & radio shows) will rekindle some fond memories. That's because whether it's "Which Disney Princess Am I?" or the chance to get a tin of soup with your own name on, personalisation (I prefer narcissism) really strikes a chord with people - it makes the article or programme (or tin of soup) more relevant to each and every one of us. And for programme makers and content producers like us, it offers huge potential to tell stories and in new ways.
On TV and Radio we all receive the same experience. It's one to many. Online we can make something bespoke just for you, something one to one. For the BBC this means we can start to augment our broadcast offer. As well as watching a Horizon film on dieting we can offer an iWonder guide that can help you find The Right Diet, and marvel at David Attenborough's Dinosaur bones and show you your place on Earth.
Personalised content is exciting but relatively new territory for the BBC. That's why Your Story was developed by the BBC's Connected Studio team - who have a remit to pilot new technologies and new forms of storytelling. Peter Rippon and the Rewind Team in BBCNI have been tweaking and improving the Your Story technology but that technology needs great content. That's why we collaborated with Marketing and TV Production teams to unlock our archives and work alongside the latest trail that celebrates the unique role the BBC plays in our lives.
In time we hope to use the Your Story technology to open up other parts of the vast swathes of information and achieved we have to give you more.
