Children in Need

BBC Children in Need announced its final fundraising total for the 2016 Appeal, a record breaking £60 million.

Annual plan

On Tuesday the BBC published its Annual Plan for 2017/18.

Barry Norman

Tributes were paid to the film critic and presenter Barry Norman who died on Friday 30 June aged 83.

Announcements and blogs

Drama

The Doctor Who series ten finale revealed that this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will be a multi-Doctor adventure.

Filming begins in Scotland this month on a major adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Ordeal By Innocence. The cast includes Catherine Keener and Bill Nighy.

On Thursday BBC One and Golden Globe/Bafta-winning drama producer Playground announced the cast for the upcoming adaptation of Little Women.

Sport

In an extension to the existing partnership, the BBC will continue to broadcast the International Eastbourne Event until 2024.

Radio

BBC Radio 4 confirmed special commissions to mark the 70 years since the Partition of India in 1947, and announced a series of programmes in celebration of novelist Henry James - Love Henry James.

The winners of the BBC Proms 2017 Inspire Young Composers’ Competition were announced, and Diane Louise Jordan stepped down from presenting The Sunday Hour on Radio 2.

BBC Radio 1 in Ibiza 2017, includes three massive Radio 1 broadcasts on the White Isle to showcase the station’s specialist dance output. On Friday Annie Mac revealed the line-up which includes Eric Prydz and Kolsch.

Children's

Tony Hall announced that the BBC would spend an additional £34m on content and services for children over the next three years, enabling the Corporation to deliver an enhanced online offer for its youngest audiences.

CBBC and Beano Studios announced brand new characters moving into legendary Beanotown, voiced by an all-star cast and teen music sensations Max and Harvey, were confirmed to perform at the CBBC Summer Social event in Salford Quays.

Music

The BBC Proms announced that Stax legends Booker T. Jones and Sam Moore will appear alongside Sir Tom Jones, Beverley Knight, James Morrison and Ruby Turner at this year’s festival, as part of a star studded line-up for the Late Night Prom, The Sound of Soul: Stax Records on Friday 1 September.

Online

BBC Taster launched a new virtual reality app available for free on Android and iOS. The BBC Taster VR app includes content from BBC Three and Planet Earth II and is part of BBC Taster’s remit to put the BBC’s early and experimental ideas in the hands of audiences.

On Friday the BBC released figures showing the positive impact the BBC micro:bit has had amongst UK students and teachers.

Entertainment

BBC One celebrates 50 years of pop music with Even Better Than The Real Thingwhere professional tribute artists will showcase their singing talents to re-create note-for-note performances of their idols.

Actor and radio veteran Stephen Tompkinson announced this year's winners of the Carleton Hobbs bursaries and the three BBC Norman Beaton Fellowship Winners.
