Actor John Hurt, whose death was announced at the weekend, was an irresistible sight on-screen and in the viewfinder. Rugged looks and tired-looking eyes made for a mournful looks that echoed a life of rich experience. 

Our picture archive is brimming with pictures - too many to include in a blog post. So, to mark his passing, we've selected some of the most striking. My particular favourite is the one above.
