A celebration was held on Monday 28 January at St Martin in the Fields, London, remembering the life of writer and comedian Eric Sykes, who died on 4 July 2012.

Among Sykes’ achievements was co-writing episodes of The Goon Show with Spike Milligan and a long-running television partnership with actress Hattie Jacques.

The charming Desert Island Discs that Sykes recorded in June 1997 available via the DiD archive makes a fitting tribute. One of his choices in the programme is by Sykes’ good friend, composer and musician John Williams who also performed at Monday’s memorial.

A selection of tributes from Sykes’ colleagues in the entertainment industry can be found on the BBC News website.

Additionally, some of the obituaries written about Eric Sykes can be found on the Guardian, TelegraphIndepedent and BBC News websites. There's also a slideshow of images of Eric Sykes collated from the BBC's archive picture library published on Flickr.
