Earlier today Director-General Tony Hall made a surprise appearance at the Edinburgh International TV Festival.

During the panel discussion he shared some of his hopes for the future and made two important announcements, setting new targets for women in local radio and pledging that every local radio station across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will take on an apprentice by September 2014.

In a press release on the Media Centre website, Tony says:

"I believe passionately in apprenticeships. This announcement of an additional 45 BBC apprentices demonstrates our commitment to broadening the routes through which talented young people can join the BBC. It also reaffirms our commitment to investing in talent from the broadest possible range of backgrounds and communities across the UK."

There's more on the apprentices announcement on the BBC Academy website and the new targets for women in local radio on the Media Centre. We've also produced a Storify of the session featuring tweets from members of the Festival audience.
