Carla Lane, writer of BBC sitcoms Bread, Butterflies, and The Liver Birds, has died.
In a touching tribute to the Liverpudlian writer, Paddy Shennan writing for the Liverpool Echo said,
"Carla Lane will be remembered for a large body of prime-time TV work, the bulk of which was screened during an era when the sitcom was at its most popular with viewing figures sky high."
Writing for The Telegraph, Ben Lawrence said of Lane's first BBC commission The Liver Birds,
"The writing was tender and funny, and often delved into serious subject matter. One episode saw the naïve Beryl (James) share her fears about spending the night with a man for the first time. The timid way in which she packed her wash bag for a night of passion was as touchingly truthful as it was hilarious."
Our colleagues at BBC Genome published a round-up of Carla's sitcom creations on the Genome Blog earlier this month.
Carla's appearance on Desert Island Discs in 1981 is available on the DID website.
