What is... Gentleman Jack?

Matt Seel

Gentleman Jack is a new BBC drama set in the 1830s. It explores the life of Anne Lister, woman who charmed her way into high society and planned to marry a woman.

Anne was a well-off Yorkshire landowner famous for her four-million-word diary that documented her lesbian relationships, travels and efforts to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home Shibden Hall. She was an astute businesswoman, opening a colliery and taking a hands-on approach to the estate.
