About The BBC Blog over Christmas

Laura MurrayLaura Murray|15:50 UK time, Friday, 24 December 2010

Today is my last day as editor of the About the BBC blog. It's been a real pleasure and I leave you in the very capable hands of Bridget Middleton.

The blog will be closed over the Christmas period from Friday 24 December until Tuesday 4 January and during this time you won't be able to post comments as we cannot moderate during this period.

We'll re-open in the new year.

Merry Christmas!

Laura.

4th of January? Where is Bridget? It's now the eleventh and no sign of anything new around here.

I had hoped to see some discussion of the recent decision to allow old people to continue working at the Beeb after the younger people chasing their jobs start to complain.

In my view the judge got that one wrong. The older generation now making an issue out of it were themselves the notoriously deliquent younger generation not so long ago and probably saw things very differently then.

If we all allow old people to continue indefinately, just because they are old, Britain will quickly become like one of those African states where the elected leader sees one mandate as voting him into power for life and would rather wreck the whole show than relinquish any power. Or perhaps to put it less dramatically and more persuasively, we could all be stuck with old farts like Jeremy Clarkson, Nick Ross or even Chris Evans until they are so old they can no longer be bothered turning up for work, long after most older viewers and listeners have lost the will to live, let alone switch on.

The young must always be given a chance to shine while they have enthusiasm for life and the older generation should know it's time to move on when they have the wisdom to understand why it will always be so. If they don't then they deserve a polite and discrete nudge in the right direction.
