On this day in 2000, Manchester United beat Manchester City 1-0 at Maine Road, in the first Manchester derby for five years. David Beckham scored the only goal of the game, with a stunning 30-yard free kick after just 95 seconds.
United fan Mike called 606 after the game to talk about “the next Franz Beckenbauer” – Wes Brown. Mike thought Brown was outstanding against City, and was “a better player than Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Matthew Upson & Jonathan Woodgate put together”.
Mike also believed that Wes Brown should have been the first man on the England team sheet in 2000.
As England get ready to face Germany tomorrow evening, who would be your first choice defensive pairing in Brazil next year?
