What should happen when matches are postponed?

Blog comments are currently unavailable. Find out more.

Post categories:

Producer WillProducer Will|17:10 UK time, Wednesday, 18 January 2012

Tonight Chesterfield entertain Oldham in the first leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area final – 24 hours after the game was meant to be staged.

The two sides are separated by just 50 miles, so when the match was postponed yesterday because of a frozen pitch just before midday, it would have certainly been annoying to a number of fans, but one they could accept as they wouldn’t have set off on their journeys for the evening kick off.

However, at the weekend, MK Dons called off their League 1 game against Carlisle just 75-minutes before kick off – with most of the visiting fans probably having already parked and in Milton Keynes after making the 260-mile trip.

Match referee Darren Sheldrake deemed there was a 30-yard section of pitch which was unplayable at 1.45pm but surely MK Dons officials or ground staff should have realised the game was in doubt much earlier, and especially considering the huge journey away fans had to undertake.

To his credit, Dons chairman Pete Winkelman talked to Chappers and Robbie on Saturday evening to put his version of events across and apologise to fans – an honourable act especially given his club’s horrendous error of judgment earlier on in the day.

The club have since agreed to reimburse the Carlisle fans their ticket, and give them two each for the return fixture and are putting on two coaches to the game

However, the game will almost undoubtedly now have to be played on a week night – given the hectic schedule already in place – making it all the more difficult for Carlisle fans to travel down unless they take a day off work.

What do you think should happen in these sorts of situations?

- Should the club refund those who traveled down?

- There were suggestions during the show that the club should donate the money/gate revenue to charity?

- Could the game be switched to another location, mid-way between the clubs or perhaps even make it a home game for the visitors who were let down?

Listen to what Winkelman had to say, and let us know your thoughts about what should happen next.

How far would you go to look like a footballer?

Thierry Henry is back at Arsenal, Paul Scholes is trotting out for Manchester United – has someone put football in a time machine and sent us back to 2004?

Henry returning perhaps isn’t so much a shock, but I remember when we got to Salford a couple of weeks ago for the show in front of a studio audience I told Editor Jo there was a murmur suggesting Paul Scholes was making a come back - she just laughed at me.

A lot of jokes have been made about the next player to come out of retirement – indeed Robert Pires was trending on Twitter yesterday after he said he was training at Arsenal and speculation was rife he was about to make a dramatic return.

He later claimed it was only to maintain his fitness…

… But does he just want to play with Henry one more time and make up for that fluffed penalty?

We’ve enjoyed all the old names flying about the office – great memories of Paolo di Canio pushing over referees, Gazza grabbing Vinnie Jones’ more sensitive parts, and the amazing hairstyles which were flowing in the 1990s.

So we opened it up to you, the fans, who came back with some amazing names – not to make a comeback, but just to remember and celebrate.

We’ve collated a selection of them in this image below from Twitter (#PLicons) and Facebook.

The 2012 Breakout Stars XI

Blog comments are currently unavailable. Find out more.

Post categories:

Producer WillProducer Will|15:01 UK time, Monday, 9 January 2012

With the back pages and airwaves filled with transfer rumours and speculation, we thought we’d ask you who you think is going to break through in 2012.

You got in touch in your droves on Facebook and Twitter using #2012XI.

The majority of you focused on those who are already plying their trade in the UK, with the exception of, Xherdan Shaqiri, currently of FC Basel – but one who could soon be elsewhere.

He’s joined up front by Scottish sensation Jordan Rhodes who’s been knocking them in for Huddersfield in League 1 – but may be doing it at a higher level before the year is out.

The midfield consists of two who could be very important as their sides try to balance a number of competition at the same time – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Josh McEachran – and already a regular at Swansea, Joe Allen.

The quartet is completed by James McClean of Sunderland, who captains the side, by virtue of the fact he was the most hotly tipped player out of the lot.

The back four proved contentious – especially given Phil Jones’ recent run of form – and debate around Davide Santon, but Nathaniel Clyne and Ciaran Clark seemed to be undisputed by most of you.

Picking a keeper was difficult. Tim Krul came close, but many of you regarded Fulham’s David Stockdale as a possible breakthrough player in 2012, if he’s given a run in the first team.

Team Sheet:

David Stockdale (Fulham/Ipswich)

Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace)

Phil Jones (Man Utd)

Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa)

Davide Santon (Newcastle)

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)

Josh McEachran (Chelsea)

Joe Allen (Swansea)

James McClean (Sunderland)

Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield)

Xherdan Shaqiri (FCBasel)

The first ever 606 in front of a live audience was a pretty daunting prospect for everyone in the office – but one we were relishing.

We decamped to the BBC Philharmonic Studios across the plaza in Salford with Mark Chapman hosting affairs alongside Jason Roberts – who just about made it from Blackburn as the clocked ticked to 6.06pm – and joined by 250 audience members.

As part of Celebrate Sport our listeners watched and contributed to the madness of a live 606 show.

And contribute they did!

From Brian the Everton fan who felt it might be time for David Moyes to go, to Gary and Peter the City and United fans whose son and daughter are getting married in June (title party for who?) to Tom the Grimsby Town fan who wants an investigation into the performance against Salisbury.

More importantly there was a lot of waving of red and yellow cards which we had dished out to the audience to show their agreement or disagreement with points made during the show by callers, other audience members and of course Mark and Jason.

Mark Chapman even donned a jacket for the show so we knew it was an occasion. But the man who claims to love his clothes, Jason Roberts, rocked up in his Blackburn/space traveling kit.

We are already busy planning the next live show - where do you want us to visit?

But to get a teaser of things, this video sums up what went on.
