Kenny Dalglish

Earlier this week, Anthony Bliss, posted this on our Facebook page:

"LAST SEASON - Liverpool are rubbish, constant talk of financial troubles, playing in Europe and it's all Roy Hodgson's fault.

THIS SEASON - Liverpool are awesome, financially secure, not hindered by having to play in Europe and Kenny Dalglish is great.

So how's it all going? After 14 games:

THIS SEASON - Liverpool 15 points behind leaders (with a game in hand)

LAST SEASON - Liverpool nine points behind leaders

THIS SEASON - Liverpool five points behind fourth (with a game in hand)

LAST SEASON - Liverpool six points off fourth

No Europe for Liverpool this season while Hodgson was taking them to the top of their Europa Cup group last term.

Hodgson had to manage under constant talk of him getting the boot, constant reference to Liverpool's financial troubles and without the big money signings Dalglish has been allowed to make.

So why the difference in how they are regarded? Why no big moans from Liverpool supporters this season? Are they accepting they have reached their level?"

The first reaction in the 606 office was: “Fans love him [Dalglish] so naturally he'll get more time - that's about the extent of it.”

But this is a fascinating comparison.

Liverpool fans – were you really that upset with life under Hodgson and if so, what do you think of King Kenny?

Surely after all that money he’s spent on Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson etc you’d be expecting him to do significantly better than the man he replaced?

Let us know your thoughts – because I think Mr Bliss has a point.

15 points behind leaders who are basically invincible in the EPL is a lot better than last year and that one game in hand makes all the difference. The top four is a realistic proposition this year.

Roy was expected finish in top 4 despite the year before finishing 7th, then just escaping bankruptcy, losing their best fit player to Barca, having a 50m striker who couldn't be bothered and a group of players who refused to adapt to a new system. Roy's record is almost identical to the same time at the end of the great Raf's reign. If Scunthorpe reserves put on the red and had the liver bird on their chest the kop would still automatically expect the team to assume their god given place at the head table.

Top four and I'll eat my hat. Liverpool will finish 5th or 6th based on the fact they are the 5th or 6th best team.

  • Comment number 4.

The truth of it is that results haven't been what was expected. The difference between last season and this one has been the performances. We're playing football that is great to watch, not quite Tottenham or Arsenal, but it's getting better.

Last season we were terrible to watch, even if results were okay. Of course Daglish is going to get favourable treatment as he is a legend. Hodgson said the right words, but his methods just weren't right for the team at the time.
