Manson: The Lost Tapes - what the reviewers think

BBC Radio 5 Live Afternoon Edition’s TV reviewers this week are Anna Leszkiewicz from The New Statesman and Christopher Hooton from The Independent.

Anna says: “It’s not just a retelling of the same old story we’ve heard before”
“The premise of this documentary is - they’ve got a lot of unseen footage of the family talking about why they fell for Charles Manson in the way that they did. It shows what it was like being part of the family, with lots of footage from the actual time, and there’s also some contemporary footage of two women who were part of the family talking now about how they feel about what they did at the time.
“I can see how, if you were an obsessive about this case, it would complete a piece of the puzzle for you.
“It’s footage that was filmed for a 1970’s documentary called ‘Manson’, but there was a lot of footage that wasn’t used and the filmmaker who made that film died last year. That’s when this footage came to light.
“It is crazy, shocking stuff to hear and it is disturbing footage.
“It does feel a bit ‘tabloidy’ though.”

Chris says: “You don’t learn anything new, but it has a mood to it”
“Charles Manson is barely in it, so it’s not just another insight into him.
"It’s very much about these people who had strange parents, or no parents, and were bereft of a paternal figure in their lives - who ended up being taken in.
“It’s interesting the way that these people seemed like hippies and should be extremely liberal, but this kind of racism spread among the family through Charles Manson – it’s weird to see that juxtaposition happen.”
