Trying: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on Trying.

It's a new sitcom from Apple TV+ starring Rafe Spall and Imelda Staunton, and is centred around a young couple who are trying to start a family.

All eight episodes are now available on Apple TV+.

Scott says: “It talks about stuff I’ve not really seen in other TV shows before"

"One of the things I have always admired about TV is how it can benefit society, if a TV show talks about an issue with sensitivity and heart. This is one of those shows. Trying focuses on the adoption process and gives us a real understanding of all of the steps that you would have to take before you can have a child.

"There are episodes that focus the checks that they will have to make and the effect it has on you not just in terms of your patience, but with your personal life… Keeping that emphasis consistently heart of the show is a really, really good thing. And it's perfectly paced too.

"I think the opening episode tries to do a lot though. It tries to be your best friend, it tries to drag you in, it tries to introduce the sensitivity around the topic, but I find that once you go beyond the first episode, it (thankfully) manages to relax a bit. It finds its feet quickly.

"I just want to give it some credit because it talks about stuff I’ve not really seen in other TV shows before."

Hayley says: “It was written with heart”

"I thought it had some really well-observed bits. There's the bitter madness of women on IVF that is something that hasn't really been addressed. It's not their fault: their bodies are hormonally a war-zone and they are understandably completely sad. I've had friends going through this and they sometimes say mad things at parties but you let it slide because you know what they're going through. I haven't seen that addressed in a sitcom before.

"I thought it had some really good jokes although sometimes the dialogue felt a little over-written at times, but it was, on the whole, written with heart. My problem with it, and it’s minor, but grew over the episodes, is that it felt like a show about London, but written by someone who doesn't live in London. They've made London a very big character - specifically Camden, to the point of putting Camden Lock in the animated sequence at the beginning. But the main characters are not living the kind of life you live in Camden if one of you is a teacher and the other one works in a call centre.

"I think maybe this would have worked better if it was just some miscellaneous English city or town rather than trying to transplant a story that doesn't ring true here. By making it London-centric and then getting it slightly wrong, it detracted from the story and the jokes for me. It was a slightly disappointing bum note, because the story is a good one and the leads are amazing."
