Sex Education S3: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell share their thoughts on Sex Education season 3 on Netflix. The show follows insecure Otis (Asa Butterfield) who sets up a sex-therapy clinic at his high school with the help of rebellious fellow pupil Maeve (Emma Mackey). In this season, new headteacher, Miss Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke) joins Moordale High with a mission to cleanse students minds.

Hayley says: "It's like an instructional video"

"I don’t get the hype with this show. I think it's trading on being ruder than other shows but not in a way that is more interesting or funny. To me, it feels no funnier than flipping to the sex page of a biology textbook when I was 13.

"I just come away from this show feeling nothing but bored by the idea of sex. It feels self-consciously try hard in its approach and styling (they have made this pseudo-American high school design their whole thing of the show, but it bothers me they use the same music as John Hughes did) and to me it's like an instructional video that you're made watch in school dressed to look like something fun.

"I know that I’m not the target audience, but I can also say with absolute authority that I don’t think I would have liked it at the point when I was."

Scott says: "This is the best show on Netflix right now"

"I cannot disagree with Hayley more! I didn’t get this show at first - I found the American feel to the school it is set in rather jarring - but this show has such depth and character, you can't help but fall in love with them.

"Even characters that I thought were stereotypical to begin with, like the school bully who was homophobic to a pupil he was secretly in love with - a cliché we've seen many times in other shows - was then transformed into something more tender, thoughtful and considered. I was completely blown away by how much this show has changed from its very first episode. This is the best show on Netflix right now."
