This Way Up S2: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan share their thoughts on series two of This Way Up on Channel 4 and All4.

Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan star as sisters in the comedy drama in which Bea plays a woman recovering from a nervous breakdown.

Scott says: "I binged it all in one sitting"

"This is a show that does mental health so well because it explores it in all of its complexity. From not admitting how you might be feeling because you are afraid of being seen as a liability, to not telling anyone about a stint in rehab whilst dating because you are afraid of the assumptions people have about rehab.

"It interestingly also explores mental health from a concerned loved one too. Shona, played by Sharon Horgan, is never able to fully relax because she’s concerned about her sister. Yet, I want to point out, this is not an issues based comedy drama. There’s so much more than that. It’s about family and siblings and the perils of modern living. It has the pace of modern living. It also has such heart.

"The chemistry between Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan too is worth mentioning. You actually believe they are sisters. I have three older sisters and I see similarities in their relationship throughout.

"The second series is available to watch now, but I reckon it is best to watch the first series before this one, merely for plot purposes. I binged it all in one sitting. I bet you will too."

Hayley says: "More charming than funny"

"I would say it’s a sort of Must Watch. My review is very much the same as it was with the first series, in that it's fine. I think when the first series came out in 2019 I judged it a little too harshly. I think because Fleabag had happened more recently, and also Daisy Haggard’s ‘Back to Life’ was out, and it's another show about a millennial woman falling apart and trying to put herself back together.

"It has funny moments but I think it’s more charming than funny. If It came on the TV I wouldn’t change the channel but it’s not something I would seek out."

This Way Up series two is available now on All4.

Must Watch is released as a podcast every Monday evening from BBC Sounds and all other good podcast providers.

This week, the team hear from Ben Miller about Professor T on ITV and BritBox. Plus reviews of Monsters At Work on Disney + and Lie With Me on Channel 5.
