Ghosts S2: What the Must Watch reviewers think

Every week, the Must Watch podcasters review the biggest TV and streaming shows.

This week, Scott Bryan and Hayley Campbell share their thoughts on the second series of Ghosts on BBC One. The sitcom from the team behind Horrible Histories sees a young couple (Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe) inherit a house only to find it's haunted.

Hayley says: "It becomes this very strange flatshare comedy"

"It’s not entirely my thing — just because it feels a bit too CBeebies — but it’s very silly, has a great cast and is very charming and lovable. It has a high gag count and my favourite running joke is the ghost of a nineties MP called Julian. He doesn’t have any trousers on because he died in the middle of a sex scandal so he does the whole show in his pants.

"Since the ghosts don’t have anything to worry about, because they’re dead and the worst has already happened, they’re bored out of their minds and stuck in the house together. It becomes this very strange flatshare comedy which might even have more resonance now that we’ve experienced being stuck inside, not being able to leave and haunting our own houses."

Scott says: "Cheery and nice and it gets you right in the feels"

I absolutely love this show. As Hayley says it does feel a bit CBeebies but I don’t think that’s in any way a bad thing. It’s in the same comedic style of Horrible Histories but slightly tweaked for an adult audience. I love the fact that it seems to be a show where everybody had an absolute hoot making it. That always gravitates and comes through the screen.

Every single line has been really well executed - there are so many little jokes and references. It’s also got such heart. I remember in the first series, I was in tears when there was a storyline about one ghost really missing his family. He died near the house where it’s set and his family come back every year to see the place where he died. It made a really profound point about grief that I didn’t expect, that people have to move on but it doesn't necessarily mean that you are forgotten. It’s all cheery and nice and it gets you right in the feels when you least expect it.
