Must Listen: The best trivia podcasts

Do you need some new podcast recommendations to help you win your next pub quiz?

TV presenter and podcaster Chris Johnson has chosen four of his favourite trivia-based podcasts as part of 5 Live's Must Listen, which is broadcast every Monday at midnight on the Sarah Brett show.

He's picked: Know Nonsense, Beat My Guest, The Dollop and No Such Thing As a Fish.

The Dollop

"A hysterical listen from start to finish (although be warned: the start usually happens after seven minutes of sponsorship chat). This podcast features our two comedian hosts talking about the life and times of a random individual or historical event.

"The joy of this show comes from only one of the lads knowing the topic inside out and the other merely reacting - Dave brings the trivia, Gareth is our stand-in, albeit with some darn funny improv.

"Sharp, witty and occasionally childish, this is history brought to life in a condensed and crass way that really brings the tidbits and trivia of each topic to life. Real ‘laughing out loud on the bus’ stuff."

Know Nonsense

"Quiz masters Lee and Marc are two American gents who run trivia nights professionally and so decided to challenge each other (and occasionally their family and friends) on a weekly podcast that is just about to end its first year.

"The respectful competitive nature of this show is why I enjoy it - as they break down their reasoning, you’ll often hear murmurs or sometimes cries of “No, don’t tell me!”

"Listen and compete along with them..."

No Such Thing As A Fish

"From the team of ‘elves’ who squirrel away behind the scenes of TV show QI, this delightfully daft podcast comes to us courtesy of Dan Schreiber, Anna Ptaszynski, James Harkin and Andrew Hunter Murray.

"They take it in turns to present oddball facts and unusual topics to the group and, using their combined love of trivia, see where the conversation will lead.

"This show taught me in a recent episode that even people who walk over coal and broken glass confirm that it is nothing compared to the pain of stepping on a LEGO brick whilst barefoot, so I can now pass that on to my godsons when I explain why they need to tidy their room."

Beat My Guest

"Our delightful host challenges trivia boffins from around the world to a chunky, tricky quiz with topics ranging from sports to history, cinema to science, etc.

"Every answer is met with a nice amount of info-dumping afterwards to enlighten you on each topic, and each question has a subtle clue within connected to what the following question will be, which left me overthinking everything!

"But competition is the intent of this show, as they regularly challenge the listener to play along and beat the guest (does what it says on the tin)."
