Sir Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and topping the medal table

5 live's Olympic correspondent Gordon Farquhar on Team GB's Olympic success.
Another week, another incredible Olympic games with continued success from Team GB in the boxing ring, in the dressage arena and around Hyde Park at the triathlon.
In front of huge and enthusiastic crowds, Alistair Brownlee became Olympic champion, his brother Jonny taking bronze after incurring a 15 second penalty for getting on his bike too soon in the first transition. Alistair had already been crowned world champion for the second time in 2011; his inaugural gold two years earlier made him the first competitor to win all three major world triathlon titles, having previously triumphed at junior and under-23 levels.
For Jonny Brownlee, the lower steps of the podium will be familiar as he finished second to brother Alistair at the Madrid leg of the World Championship series in June 2011, the first time that both brothers had medalled in an international triathlon. The brothers recorded a short audio diary for Tony Livesey on Radio 5 Live describing their early morning starts and the domestic rifts that come from sharing a house.
The other success which caught our collective imagination was Nicola Adams' domination of world champion Ren CanCan of China, in the women's featherweight boxing final. Not only the first Team GB medal in that event, but Adams made history by being the first gold medallist female boxer ever. The event was added to the Games only this year. Lix Green of BBC Radio Leeds caught up with Nicola while she was deep in training before the games.
Also capturing the public imagination is Shanaze Reade who, at the time of writing, is preparing herself for the BMX final. She is back to full health and right on the pace after a dramatic crash in Beijing 2008 that saw her break her wrist and damage her pelvis. Only 23, she has already won the world BMX championships three times and will be hoping to banish memories of the Beijing Games, where she finished eighth in the final after a collision. She described her victory at the Olympic test event in August 2011 as her "personal career highlight" and will be looking to replicate that success in the final.
The number-crunchers at More or Less have been scratching the surface of the medals table, working out who is the most successful country per capita. And the team investigated the truth in the claims that Yorkshire is enjoying more success than Australia. Fascinating stuff, even for the non-mathematicians among us.
And finally Kirsty Lang at Radio 4's Front Row heard from Mike Kelt, CEO of the special effects company Artemis, who lent so much wonder to Danny Boyle's fabulous opening ceremony. Mike describes how a 6-metre tall Lady Godiva has travelled down from Coventry, pulled by a specially made 50-cyclist bicycle, and will reach London just in time for the closing ceremony. Mike won't reveal what is in the closing ceremony, but hints that it will be "very, very big". So watch this space.
The next BBC Olympic 2012 Podcast will be presented by Eleanor Oldroyd on Tuesday 14th August. BBC Olympics Correspondent Gordon Farquhar will return on Friday 17th August.

The pre-recorded pieces on today about women medallists, as an example, are too loud and intrusive. They hardly get to say much other than loud music, crowd roar, commentator yelling, then on to the next. The dirge of monotone preceding it of course, from a certain presenter. In the cold light of day, when you look back, you will see that although in many cases the broadcaster rose to the occasion, there were times when they most terribly failed. I did not like the way Vicky spoke to Aaron Cooke, or the way Campbell spoke to Cameron. Just who do you think you lot are in the 5 Live Temple of Perfection? All the time the spotlight is moved from people achieving their goals and put on to how many consecutive days you have broadcast, or how sore your throats are, or how many of you all managed to see every gold medal GB won. Thanks a bunch. Goodness me, the girl who won the Dressage wasn't even posh! Shock horror to the 5 Live team.
Have to listen to the station as there is often no other way to follow the events, but you all need to calm down, be professional and stop thinking you are more important than ANY person you are interviewing.

If their over inflated egos' get any bigger they'll have to build larger studios. The way they come across on radio disgusts me.If only they knew we aren't interested or care about them but the people they are supposed to be interviewing. It's all becoming totally unbearable. If I can just about manage listening to the hourly news headlines its a miracle and no I don't know who they think they are either ?

I don't blame the kid, it is not his fault he was chosen by the hissy fits at UK Taekwondo, but let's face it, we would be celebrating a GOLD today if they had done the right thing. Muhammed really rubbed salt in the wounds of Cook and all his supporters, many many thousands of them, in this interview. Hope Cook retains his world rankings, let's hope he is chosen to go even.
Loved the hockey girls though, their bronze was more than deserved whereas getting a bronze in a taekwondo repechage is not quite as shiny.

On the other hand, I think it was genius to have the same presenters on the same time bands throughout the fortnight. Eventually we all knew who to miss and who to follow. My personal gold medals go to Mark Chapman (of course)and Peter Allen. My silvers to the Breakfast team even despite that one hoarse voice, and a silver to Livesey and Mike but not the newsreader who doesn't know how to pronounce hard words. 'Fraid I never listened consistently in the evening because I would rather watch. But Pougatch deserves a gold because even if I didn't hear him, we all know he is a brilliant presenter.
Going to miss the fun and all the stuff we have enjoyed these last few months with the build up and then the delivery. So overall, the 5 Live team win a gold from me.

The coverage has had some fantastic commentary (especially Alan Green, Simon Brotherton, Mike Costello & Darren Fletcher) some great punditry (Rob Hayles, James Cracknell, Steve Bunce) and excellent presenting (Mark Chapman, Mark Pougatch & Tony Livesey).
My biggest complement is that it told a far better story of the Olympics than the TV managed with pictures and the commentators all sounded like they cared about the sport they were describing.
My only gripes were some of the presenters (Nicky Campbell & Colin Murray especially) appeared to think they were bigger than 'the biggest show on earth'

The commentary as ever was perfect and in particular Mike Costello and Simon Brotherton, two of the very best in the business and the men to listen to for the big moments.
Also special thanks to John Murray, Gordon Farquar and Mark Pougatch for the opening ceremony coverage.
But all the fantastic commentators deserve a mention - Bob Ballard, Jonathan Overend, Alastair Bruce-Ball, Darren Fletcher, Alastair Eykyn, Rob Nothman, Chris Mitchell and Martin Cross. Plus Alan Green fantastic as always on the rowing and John Hunt was excellent covering some different sports.
Great punditry as mistered5 said and I also think the presenting combinations all worked well. Mark and Victoria, Colin and Peter and then Mark Pougatch and Tony Livesey.
Well done to all involved.

Think the BBC needs to make more of an effort to consolidate the real legacy of the games rather than providing a platform for non-value add rants that have no basis. It would be lovely to have some BBC coverage on what communities are doing to continue the momentum and interest generated by the games.

I think it is a bit disingenuous of the BBC on many occasions to design a phone in question which promotes these type of rants to happen. So actually I blame the media and not the message.
Personally I am sick of hearing about legacy etc., already my eyes are glazing over. This weekend when there is a mass 'try it and see' at hundreds of sports clubs, we will see how ready they all are to take up the enthusiasm engendered by the Olympic dreams coming true for some of the GB Team. That will hopefully be a good start.

It always seems a bit strange to me when a random member of the public is given the same airtime as an expert (usually from Salford University!) on the topic of the day. It's OK when it's a subject like today, but when it's a subject like Quantitative Easing I wonder what value the callers give.

I think Salford is the centre of the go-to for 5 Live. Shame about the fact the rest of the UK is hidden from view. It is cheap though, to get local experts. 35p on the bus to MediaCity or if you are brave, a swift walk through the dodgy bit where the poor Indian student was murdered.
However, this blog is about the Olympics, and I would like to know more about how the Paralympics will be covered on 5 Live, and how we can feed back our views on all the coverage without a Feedback programme of our own.
Blog please!

Do we really want to hear the biggotted comments of the great unwashed purporting to be entertainment? Ban all phone-in's I say along with Tweet comments. Just one problem. Five Live would have to close down such is the lack of original material ... or should I simply say originality?
